Q - What is NSU?

A - Nikkei Student Union is a social cultural club focused on educating people about Japanese American (Nikkei) culture and building a welcoming community.

We offer a wide variety of events throughout the year including cultural festivals, fun socials, collaborations with other NSUs in SoCal, and much more! Some of our annual highlights include our big/little program, Culture Night, and our pilgrimage to Manzanar.

Q - Do you have to be Japanese to join?

A - No, you do not have to be Japanese! NSU is a community that welcomes everybody.

Q - Who runs NSU?

A - NSU is completely student-run with an Executive Team and a Board that plan events, run logistics, handle finances, and more. If you are interested in being part of Board in the future, feel free to DM us or ask in person!

Q - What are the events like?

A - We offer a wide variety of events throughout the year which range from weekly general meetings to large scale events such as Winter Fest and Culture Night. GMs are our most consistent events, and they happen every Thursday at 7pm. We also collaborate with other INC (Intercollegiate Nikkei Council) schools multiple times a quarter, in which we usually travel to the LA area for.

Unless there is a signup/payment form mentioned for an event, it is free and open to anybody! New members are welcome to join NSU at any point in the year.

Q - How do I join?

A - Show up to one of our general meetings or events! There is no fee to participate in our events, as they are open to all UCSB students. Our Instagram and Messenger group chat are your main sources for NSU related news. Check our linktree in our bio for the link to join our Facebook Messenger chat that is used to send out information about upcoming events and club updates!

Q - What is the paid membership program?

A - The paid membership program is a $20 fee to have certain perks throughout the year. This includes participation in the big/little program, priority access to intramural sports teams, priority in car/ride assignments when traveling, discounted merchandise, and much more. However, you DO NOT need to be a paid member to attend NSU events.
