STUDENT VOICES DESERVE A SEAT AT THE TABLE.

On September 27, Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed AB 2551, a bill that would have increased transparency around the enforcement of campus protest policies and created opportunities for student and community input on Time, Place, and Manner (TPM) restrictions.

The SUA Office of External Affairs stands in opposition to this veto. As students, we deserve transparency, meaningful consultation, and accountability when policies directly impact our ability to speak, organize, and protest on our campuses.

AB 2551 was a step toward ensuring students are not simply informed of decisions made about our rights, but are included in shaping them.

We will continue advocating at the campus, UC, state, and federal levels for student voices and the right to political expression. by @ucscevp

WHO ACTUALLY RUNS THE UC?

If you’ve ever wondered who makes the big decisions that shape your experience as a UC student, start with the UC Board of Regents.

From tuition and student fees to campus policies, governance, and the direction of the UC system, the Regents hold enormous power over our university. And yet, there’s only one student voice among 18 Regents.

So who are the Regents? What power do they actually have? And where does the student voice fit into UC governance?

Swipe through to learn more about the Board, the Student Regent, and why student participation matters.

The SUA Office of External Affairs is committed to making UC governance more accessible and helping students advocate for themselves and their peers.

πŸ“š Stay informed.
πŸ“£ Stay engaged.
✊🏽 Hold the UC accountable.

Let’s keep the UC accountable together.

The Department of Homeland Security has proposed to impose a $103,265 fee to all H-1B cap-subject applications. If passed, the fee would become a detrimental barrier for international students and new immigrants seeking to join the US workforce.

Submit a public comment to the federal register by September 24th, 20:59PST / 23:59 EST to speak against the H-1B Fee. Anonymous comments are accepted!!

Today, our University Affairs Chair Zaynab made public comment to the UC Regents during their meeting at UCLA, opposing the reinstatement of the SAT/ACT standardized testing as admissions requirements. πŸ—£οΈπŸ“ŠπŸš«

Access to the premiere public research university, the UC, must be rooted in data and center student success, not a test that measures wealth over college readiness.

UCSA urges the Regents to shut down any consideration of bringing back the SAT on future generations of UC students and instead explore critical reforms like closing basic needs insecurity gaps that dramatically impact student persistence yet continue facing tens of thousands of our peers. #SAT #collegeaccess #educationequity taken in UCLA Meyer & Renee Luskin Conference Center & Hotel by @ucscevp

🚨 ACA 18 is at a critical moment and we need your help!

The UC Board of Regents makes decisions that shape our tuition, housing, basic needs, academic experience, and so much more. Yet, out of 26 voting members, only ONE is a student.

ACA 18 would change that. It would give UC students a second voting seat on the Board of Regents β€” one for an undergraduate and one for a graduate student β€” doubling student representation where decisions about our lives are made.

But we need to keep pushing to get ACA 18 on the November 2028 ballot. πŸ“£

Swipe for the who, what, and how, including who to contact and scripts you can use to take action.

THE ISSUE WITH THE SAT. πŸŽ“

Standardized testing has long been treated as a measure of college readiness but what happens when the test itself reflects a student’s access to resources rather than their potential?

SAT/ACT scores can be shaped by school funding, test prep, and socioeconomic background, creating barriers for students who have historically had less access to these resources. If the UC is committed to equity and a diverse student body, admissions must look beyond a single standardized metric.

So how do we stay test-free while continuing to advocate for admissions equity?

With the UC Board of Regents meeting September 15–16, now is the time to make your voice heard. πŸ—£οΈ Submit a written or public comment and tell the Regents why keeping the UC test-free matters for students across California.

Not sure where to start? Stay tuned for our Regents public comment webinars to learn how you can advocate for yourself and your peers.

Our voices belong in the room. βœŠπŸ½πŸ“š by @ucscevp
