We’re excited to announce our exhibition for the 2027 #FurtherTriennial! An Architecture of Disappearance by Sofia Karim.

An Architecture of Disappearance explores the stories of women in California prisons through the language of architecture and letters they exchange. This is a continuation of Karim’s 7-year enquiry into architecture as a language of struggle and resistance, and the hidden worlds of prisoners she works with, whose lives intertwined with her own.

From March 10-June 10, 2027 Further Triennial will celebrate Northern California’s
creative and cultural life, bringing together more than 80 arts organizations across the Greater Bay Area. The Institute of the Arts and Sciences is thrilled to participate in the first edition, “Around Here”.

We look forward to celebrating Northern California’s vibrant art historical
past and present with you!

We are pleased to announce Victor “Marka27” Quiñonez: Ni de aquí, Ni de allá on view at the IAS from October 2, 2026 - March 7, 2026.

Ni de aquí, Ni de allá (translating to “Not From Here, Not From There”) is a bold declaration of dual belonging. Featuring a wide range of artworks, Quiñonez highlights the experience many bicultural communities face of living between worlds even as violent notions of nationalism and identity pervade.

Ni de aquí, Ni de allá, organized in partnership with the Center for the Art and Advocacy (located in New York), is a part of Visualizing Abolition, an arts-based initiative that reaches across prison borders to create a future free of prisons.

🖼️ Upcoming Fall Exhibitions 2026

On October 2nd join us for a performance by Samita Sinha from 5-6pm (details to be announced), followed by the opening celebration for both exhibitions 6-8pm.

“Ni de aquí, Ni de allá” (“neither from here, nor there”), is a phrase commonly used by bilingual, bicultural communities. In the exhibition the phrase becomes a bold declaration of dual belonging against a violent notion of nationalism and identity. Through paintings, immersive installations, sculptural works, and a curated soundscape, Marka27 invites gallery goers into a vibrant, layered world where street culture meets Indigenous tradition, and personal memory collides with collective truth and activism.

Curated by Kate Fowle, this exhibition is organized in partnership with The Center for Art & Advocacy and Visualizing Abolition.

Victor “Marka27” Quiñonez, @marka_27, is a renowned visual artist working at the intersections of contemporary art, graffiti, vinyl toys, fashion and design, and art activism. His work is inspired by the empowerment of marginalized communities and the fight for representation.

When Time Stands Still, Carlos Motta’s second solo exhibition with the Institute of the Arts and Sciences at University of California, Santa Cruz—features new and recent artworks which explore the unsettling experience of living in a time that seems violently stuck on repeat. The selection of video works, sculptures, installations, and drawings form a critical aesthetic historiography into how the past, mired in imperialism, colonization, and displacement, shapes the present. More than an indictment of history, the works on view also ask how time can be at once a source of oppression and a potential horizon of liberation. The exhibition offers a moving proposal about how to reclaim time, with acts of care providing a different possible cadence—one of solidarity.

Carlos Motta, @carlosalejandromotta, is a Colombian-born, New York-based, multidisciplinary artist whose practice documents the social conditions and political struggles of sexual, gender, and ethnic communities, challenging normative discourses through acts of self-representation. taken in Institute of the Arts and Sciences, University of California Santa Cruz by @ucscias

The exhibition is part of the University’s Visualizing Abolition program, an arts-based initiative that reaches across prison borders to contribute to the unfolding collective story and alternative imagining underway to create a future free of prisons.

Highlighting the multidisciplinary nature of @Marka_27’s practice, the exhibition invites viewers into a vibrant, layered world where street culture meets Indigenous tradition, and where personal memory collides with collective truth and activism.

CALL TO ACTION: #FingersCrossed4Freedom

In July 2026, Tim sent a message from his cell “a concept just came to me. Fingers Crossed For Freedom. It conjures up a lot of images and commotions in my head.”

#FingersCrossed4Freedom is a rallying cry against wrongful imprisonment, a sign and symbol for justice, liberation and freedom movements around the world.

We are so lucky to have this fabulous exhibition still on view in Santa Cruz through the summer 🍃

Redwoods Rasanblaj: Origins and Disentanglements by Gina Athena Ulysse opened during Ripple Effect - and if you haven’t seen it yet, you still can. It’s a beautiful, powerful multisited public art project spanning the Institute for Arts and Sciences and sites across UC Santa Cruz and Santa Cruz.

Rasanblaj is a term Gina Athena coined in 2014: assembly, gathering, regrouping - of ideas, things, people, and spirits. Where Western ideas like collage or assemblage stop, rasanblaj goes further, honoring the spiritual alongside the material to confront what colonialism fractured.

This site-specific project regroups African diasporic resonances right here in the redwoods - pieces built from wrapped, tied, braided, and joined materials gathered, found, purchased, and donated by community members. It follows Gina Athena’s large-scale installation at the 2024 Dakar Biennale, and marks ten years since her original call for rasanblaj.

On view at the IAS through August 16, with satellite installations at sites around town - check ias.ucsc.edu for locations and hours.

Gina Athena Ulysse is an artist-scholar and Professor of Humanities at UCSC, and the inaugural recipient of the IAS Faculty Spotlight Exhibition. Her work has shown at the Brooklyn Museum, MoMA, the Sydney Biennale, and Dakar Biennale, and she’s a 2025 MacDowell fellow. She’s also the author of A Call to Rasanblaj: Black Feminist Futures and Ethnographic Aesthetics and the forthcoming A Year and A Day: Leonore Mau and Haiti.

Go find this one before it’s gone. 🐚
