Meet the Interns/Apprentices pt 1!

Vini Daley started as an athletic performance intern in January 2024. After a year, Daley advanced to an apprentice role, and his responsibilities shifted to the golf team. This year, Daley is working with the men’s soccer team.
Before his career in performance training, he had a distinguished rugby career in national and international invitational tournaments, starting on two men’s Division I National Championship teams and finishing as an academy player in the MLR.
Daley earned a bachelor’s in Psychology with a minor in rehabilitation and disabilities from Springfield College and a master’s in kinesiology, with a concentration in clinical exercise physiology, from Point Loma Nazarene University. He also holds his CSCS and USAW-L1 certifications and is working toward ACSM’s CEP.
Daley’s career began in the college weight room and later grew into eight years as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor in downtown Boston. He shifted into strength and conditioning, helped build an S&C facility outside Boston, and spent six years working with high school and college athletes. During that time, the facility also hosted the New England Freejacks and supported several athletes who went on to make the USA Rugby Women’s National Team.
After moving to San Diego in late 2022, he served as general manager of a personal training studio before joining UC San Diego Recreation in 2023, where he taught move right classes, provided personal training services, mentored trainers, and coached post-rehab clients through the WorkStrong program at the Rehabilitation Services clinic within the Koman Outpatient Pavilion.

Macy Nuñez joined the UC San Diego Athletics Department in 2025 as an athletic performance intern who served with the women’s basketball, women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, women’s water polo, women’s rowing, and fencing programs.

Nuñez currently serves as the assistant performance coach for the women’s basketball, softball, and women’s water polo teams.
Nuñez earned her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and business administration from Point Loma Nazarene University in May 2024 and her master’s degree kinesiology with an emp by @ucsd_athleticperformance

Do the simple things really well.

The exercises will change and the programming will progress, but the fundamentals stay the same.

For our pitchers, it starts with building a strong foundation. Develop single leg strength and stability. Learn to control, resist, and produce rotation. Build routines that complement what is happening on the mound.

Once that foundation is established, we can build around the individual needs and demands of each pitcher.

Keep it simple. Set the standard. Do the little things well.

Move well. Own positions. Execute the fundamentals. Bring intent to every rep.

The training does not need to be complicated to be effective. Get really good at the simple things, establish the standard, and build from there.

Early days are hard. Then you get to watch an athlete crush a lift, hit a PR, or step back onto the field… and you remember exactly why you do this.

Summer Training Dump

The guys laid a strong foundation of relative strength, aerobic fitness, and competitive juice over the last 6 weeks, and got to show it off a bit this past week.

Relative strength: We used 3RM’s for bench press, chin ups, front squat, and trap bar deadlift with relative strength goals (%BW) that they knocked out of the park.

Aerobic Fitness: We used the Yo-Yo IR1 at the start of Summer to assess fitness levels and prescribe conditioning to meet the players where they’re at. Post-Summer scores leave me confident their legs/lungs can handle preseason demands and recover between hard days

Competition: Partner contact prep, weight room finishers, and team competition conditioning kept intent high as we built our base. Now that our movement quality/consistency is here, we’ll start adding VBT/jump live leaderboard to keep intent at a max.

Some restoration, some travel preparation. Capitalizing on the time we have now before we board the bus to the airport. After some very valuable conversations with @danmode_ruderock & @mrdoitmoving I have gained some valuable insight on how to better help a few of my athletes between games. In the college environment, we train teams mostly together but we need to have the awareness to know individual needs and keep those on the forefront of our programming to maximize preparation and readiness. by @ucsd_athleticperformance
