Check it out! Our Aerospace Engineering students from MAE 2 in Fall 2023 tested out their designs in a head-to-head competition with classmates. 🔥

Students mastered the art of rotor dynamics to create unique rotor decelerator vehicles. These prototypes were engineered to spin as they fell, reducing their descent speed by generating thrust. ✈️

During the last weeks of the quarter, the teams battled it out in a reverse race competition to determine whose design descended the slowest! Last to hit the ground wins! 🏁

Awesome work to all MAE 2 students! 👏

Join us in welcoming our new faculty member Penghui Cao to the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering 🔱

Penghui Cao joins the UC San Diego Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department and our Fusion Engineering Institute. Cao studies how materials behave in extreme environments — particularly fusion energy systems — and designs new materials capable of withstanding the high temperature, thermal flux and radiation exposure in fusion reactors. by @ucsdmae

This summer, 11 undergraduate engineering students at the Jacobs School received scholarships to conduct research in labs on campus as part of the IDEA Engineering Research Scholarship program.

This is the fourth year that the program has provided summer scholarships for undergraduates to master core research skills as they work on real-world engineering projects, thanks to support from San Diego-based industry partner General Atomics.

Nanoengineering student Alison Lin, pictured here, was awarded a scholarship to develop prototypes for a soft, pneumatic vine robot that could one day replace the rigid and often uncomfortable speculums used for pelvic exams.

Aerospace engineering student David Mkrtchian was awarded an IDEA Engineering Research Scholarship to continue his work on a drone with tilted motors that can move while remaining level.

In Memoriam: Professor Dan Olfe (1935–2026)

The UC San Diego Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering mourns the passing of Professor Dan Olfe, a founding faculty member of the former Department of Applied Mechanics and Engineering Sciences (AMES), who passed away on September 23, 2026.

Professor Olfe joined UC San Diego in 1964 and played an important role in shaping the department during its early years. He served as department chair during the construction and initial occupancy of the Engineering Building Unit (EBU) and developed the department’s first engineering graphics course, AMES 15. His work in this area led to the publication of his textbook, Computer Graphics for Design, in 1995.

Following his retirement in 1994, Professor Olfe pursued his passion for art, combining his computer expertise with his creativity to design art quilts that were exhibited throughout the country.

We are grateful for Professor Olfe’s contributions to UC San Diego, his dedication to engineering education, and the lasting impact he leaves on our department.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family.
