Mireille Chahine is the newly minted associate dean and director of @udextension. A long-time Cooperative Extension veteran of the University of Idaho, Chahine was drawn to the First State because of the prominence of agriculture.

“I love that agriculture is Delaware’s No. 1 industry. I believe that food security is national security,” emphasized Chahine. “And in Delaware, because of the size of the state, I like that UD Extension can work with rural, suburban and urban communities.”

She knew @udelaware before she ever set foot on campus, highlighting that the University is national and international.

“Before I even interviewed for this position, I knew of UD’s research and impactful Cooperative Extension work,” said Chahine.

Have you ever heard of Kernza? The world’s first commercially available grain may be in some of the food you eat, such as cereal.

Kernza doesn’t die off in winter, so farmers don’t need to replant it. Its roots can also improve soil health and water quality.

Researchers from @udelaware, @mit and @usdagov teamed up to study Kernza roots on our own Newark Farm! They compared them with the roots of common crops corn and alfalfa, measuring the roots with geophysical imaging to determine how many there are and how deep they go.

This data could give researchers insight into soil health and initial impressions of Kernza in the Mid-Atlantic, as the crop is currently only grown for research, not commercial purposes here.

When a person falls and gets a cut or a scrape, hydrogen peroxide helps clean the immune system and build its defenses against bad bacteria and other pathogens.

Plants make hydrogen peroxide too. It acts as a messenger, telling plant cells to beef up a plant’s defense when stressed, wounded or under attack.

@udelaware plant scientists have uncovered new knowledge that tiny nanopores called plasmodesmata send alert signals from cell to cell, generating a huge burst of hydrogen peroxide when a plant is wounded. The findings were published in the journal The Plant Cell.

Across the globe, STEM-related fields are among the fastest-growing career paths.

The next generation of innovators and problem-solvers needs quality STEM education to prepare for roles in science and technology. But the supply of highly qualified STEM teachers is shrinking.

To help address this need, @UDelaware offers a STEM Education 4+1 accelerated degree. Through this program, undergraduates in various STEM majors across the University can earn both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in five years, culminating in a year-long student-teaching residency in a Delaware school district.

Emma Carpenter, a senior in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, recognizes the impact a knowledgeable and engaging instructor can make on a student’s life. It’s the reason she chose a STEM major.

“In high school, I took every science class that was offered,” Carpenter said. “I had great teachers as role models who pushed me to pursue pre-veterinary medicine and advanced STEM classes.”

At UD, Carpenter finds role models in professors like Stephanie DeMarco, who is both a professor and a doctor of veterinary medicine. Carpenter plans to pursue both roles after completing her degree.

“After taking classes and planning lessons, I’m excited to be in an actual classroom in front of students,” Carpenter said.

Delaware high school students got their hands dirty while learning about wetland ecology during a workshop led by @UDelaware researchers.

These @DelNature Trail Ambassadors gathered in the marsh alongside the Christina River at the DuPont Nature Center (@delnature.deec) for an immersive, hands-on experience in which they explored how wetland soils support diverse habitats, filter and purify groundwater and help keep streams clean.

“Getting outside, feeling the soil in your hands and smelling the plants allows you to show students what we’re talking about."

I scream, you scream, we all scream for @UDairy ice cream!

The @UDelaware staple makes its ice cream from cow to cone and freezes more than 40,000 gallons of ice cream each year.

“We are a cow-to-cone operation,” said Jennifer Rodammer, director of operations. “It’s only a short walk from where the cows are milked to where our customers enjoy their ice cream.”

A decades-long partnership between @UDExtension and Delaware’s Agricultural Science teachers was in full force. On Sept.15, 52 educators convened at the UD Carvel Center for a day of professional development through sessions on animal science, commercial greenhouse management, farm business management and precision agriculture, with sessions taught by UD Extension experts.

“Having this connection with UD Extension is a lifeline for both new and veteran teachers,” said Brynn Bailey, an agriscience educator at Middletown High School. “We greatly appreciate the support and connection between our schools and the University of Delaware."
