Yesterday's demonstration near UF's campus was alarming for a lot of students — and that reaction is valid. We grew up in the school shooting generation. We grew up running lockdown drills alongside fire drills.

But stunts on a sidewalk don't write Florida's gun laws — lawmakers do. The vagueness we keep watching get tested, in open carry, in campus carry, in "sensitive places," exists because of the people who write (or refuse to write) these laws in the first place.

That's the part we can actually change, and it starts at the ballot box. Florida's next election is November 3rd. If you're not sure you're registered, or you don't have a plan to vote yet, text FUTURE to 644-33 to get started.

We thank UFPD for its swift response to today’s incident involving two individuals openly carrying what appeared to be rifles near campus.

While this may be legal under current Florida law, it does not erase the fear and intimidation many UF students experienced. This incident highlights the need to close gaps in Florida’s open-carry laws, particularly around sensitive locations and voter intimidation.

We won’t back down and let these agitators intimidate us, and we will continue to hold lawmakers accountable for the gaps in common sense gun laws leaving us in this position.

We remain committed to advocating for a safer, more secure campus community.

One year ago today, what should have been a quiet week studying for finals at Florida State University became a nightmare. Armed with a semi-automatic Glock pistol, a 20-year-old opened fire inside the Student Union. In minutes, two people were killed, and five others were wounded.

For hours, FSU went into lockdown as police evacuated campus. Students were forced to barricade doors with trashcans, plywood, and furniture to protect themselves. For some students, this wasn’t their first mass shooting. “Here we are yet again…[my sense of safety] was taken from me yet again.”

Since the shooting, Florida Students Demand Action leaders have rallied and demanded action on gun violence. Instead, lawmakers in Florida passed a bill allowing professors to carry hidden, loaded guns on college campuses.

“Campus carry” policies are a slap in the face to student survivors. The Florida State University community deserves better. In their honor, we fight for proactive, evidence-based solutions that keep guns off our campuses in the first place. #EndGunViolence #SeminoleStrong by @ufstudentsdemand

It’s been almost a year since the deadly shooting at Florida State University. Florida students have demanded proactive, evidence-based solutions to prevent school shootings ever since. These campus carry bills aren’t protection. They’re a slap in the face.
