🚨 After clearing the mayor’s desk, the Respect Check is now law.

NYC paraprofessionals will receive an additional $10,000 in 2027, with the first installment in January – because you fought for it.

Thank you to our champions in @NYCCouncil – especially @SpeakerMenin and @CNDeLaRosa – for rallying behind something both obvious and long overdue: paraprofessionals should be able to afford to live in the city they serve.

Paraprofessionals drove this campaign from day one. Their win is a win for every educator, and every public sector worker in this city.

But this is not the end of our fight. If the city tries anything in court, we're ready. We won't stop until this is permanent and pensionable. Our paras deserve more base pay and stronger benefits that we will continue to push for through collective bargaining in our next contract.

For our members, be on the lookout for an email from UFT on what comes next for paraprofessionals.

But in the meantime, this milestone is worth celebrating! 🥳🎉

Union membership changed what it means to have a voice and protection at work. Since the UFT’s founding in 1960 and our first contract ratification with the city, members have fought for and won better working conditions and protections along with greater support. As we begin to prepare for a new contract, let's take a look at a timeline of some UFT bargaining wins. Knowing our rights is power and will get us ready to ask for more when we take the contract survey in November. Great pictures from PS 59 in Staten Island, where members turned their teacher center into a resource room for early screening, support items and pink favors. Members also celebrated and honored multiple breast cancer survivors on their staff for UFT Pink Day - substitute teacher Sarah Rehaoui, paraprofessional Veronica Gonzalez and paraprofessional Bonnie Weiss. 🩷 A group of people wearing pink shirts stand together in front of a backdrop decorated with pink balloons and ribbons. They hold pink props and wear "We Fight Together" shirts. The setting appears to be in support of breast cancer awareness. by @uftny

Anyone who is wondering: this happens a lot and is normal. Doesn’t go to everyone. So if you got a letter like this about verifying your dependents, it’s legit. And if you didn’t; don’t worry. Your dependents are safe. Happy Wednesday by @uftny

Anna Krebushevski grew up on a farm in Poland, where she became a teacher as a young woman. She arrived in this country at 21 and began her teaching career here as a substitute teacher. She found her teaching home once she arrived at IS 51 on Staten Island.

Anna taught math for 26 years, including all of the school’s honors classes, until her retirement in 2004. She died on April 9, 2026, at age 87.

“Anna was devoted to her students, teaching them not just to pass a test but to really have a comprehension of their subject matter,” said her daughter, Joanne Crenshaw. “She was always thinking outside the box — ‘What lesson plan can I come up with to show them that what they were learning is a resource for an application in life.'”
