Missouri has some absolutely breathtaking rivers, springs, caves and ecosystems. The reality is that these amazing spaces aren’t accessible to Black folks. Racism, funding, transportation, water safety and mental health are very real barriers to Black communities. Peace, love and gratitude to board members like @rebecca_weaves & @idrew.weird community partners like @rcoutdoorsstl , donors, adult chaperones and staff that helped make the 4th annual TSI camping trip possible! Last month we spent a weekend in Cuba, MO. We floated on the Meramec River, frolicked in Maramec Spring Park, ate some delicious meals prepared by TSI Alum @cucumbacool & @chefqueenievesey , and got some much needed rest. 🌻🏕️❤️‍🔥🙏🏾

TW: Suicide ideation

This week was a huge step for the organization! We facilitated our very 1st Teen Mental Health First Aid training cohort. Shoutout to @techartista for hosting us!

Our goal is to continue to provide this training to Black and marginalized young people that typically don’t have access to therapy and other mental health resources. Our Founder, Nick Speed, completed Youth Mental Health First Aid and Teen Mental Health First Aid Facilitator Training in 2024. This training series is designed for high school, college students and young adults. There are 3 separate 90-minute sessions that can be completed in-person or virtually. DM us if you are interested in learning more. This is what community looks like!

“You have to get comfortable being uncomfortable.”

Nick Speed is transforming North St. Louis through urban agriculture and community empowerment as the Founder and Executive Director of @UjimaSTL and @GeorgeWashingtonCarverFarms. On the #FoodForAll podcast, Nick shares his journey from aspiring sports journalist to urban farming leader. His work addresses food insecurity and environmental injustice in neighborhoods long neglected due to divestment and environmental racism.

Watch the full episode and download the toolkit at FoodCitySTL.org to gain insights into the food ecosystem and the trends driving the current crisis discussed in this podcast.

With the support of incredible partners like @forestreleaf we have transformed our urban farm. Since 2023 we have added over 40 native trees and shrubs including some beautiful Rose Mallow Hibiscus shrubs and Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry trees that line the street curbs on Penrose and Lee. This is what community looks like! 💪🏾❤️‍🔥🌳

“So when it was time for us to build our youth programming, I knew that we needed to set a new standard. That young people are struggling and desperately need networks of collective care. From paying them fairly to hiring mental health professionals to support the collective. 5 years ago we purchased a house and 5 vacant lots to launch George Washington Carver Farms. Along the way I discovered this is so much bigger than growing food…”

Last Tuesday I had the honor of receiving the first ever “Just Being Nosey” Award at @stlcitygreens Gala in honor of one of their founders, Ms. Bobbie Sykes. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to meet Ms. Bobbie’s family and receive words of affirmation from her loved ones.

Shoutout to the City Greens Market team for putting on an amazing event and recognizing our work. Looking forward to future collaborations! Peace and love.

Honored to have the Nick from @ujimastl touch down on our historic property. We envisioned a future of camping with his team and talked about how we can partner with their youth program in the future.

Thank you Nick for following through - we appreciate it. 💪🏾💪🏾
