Showcase Concert Highlights

The London International Chinese Music Festival 2026 concluded with a vibrant Showcase Concert celebrating the achievements of our young musicians and summer school participants.

From erhu, pipa, guzheng, guqin, xiao and zhongruan solos to choir and ensemble performances, the concert brought together prizewinners, outstanding students and professional musicians on one stage.

Certificates were also presented to students who took part in the festival’s summer school competition and grading examinations, recognising their dedication and achievements.

Over the years, China Arts, UK Chinese Music and the London Youlan Qin Society, in collaboration with SOAS, University of London, have nurtured generations of Chinese music students and brought together a growing community of Chinese music enthusiasts in the UK. Together, we have created a valuable platform for learning, musical exchange and performance.

Thank you for following and supporting our work. We look forward to welcoming you back to the festival next year!

“Sound of the East in the West” Gala Concert Highlights 14|Mixed Chinese & Western Orchestra Finale 中西乐团终曲

Conducted by Yajie Ye, the Mixed Chinese & Western Orchestra concluded the Gala Concert with three works celebrating new composition, cross-cultural dialogue and the collective power of the orchestra.

Wanqu《弯曲》, a new work by British composer Michael Ellison, received its UK premiere. Inspired by the downward glissando of the pipa, the piece developed this distinctive gesture within a contemporary orchestral language.

This was followed by the UK premiere of Huan Li’s Echoes of the Zither Terrace after the Phoenix Alights《凤栖之后,琴台残响》.

Flowers and Moon《花好月圆》by Peng Xiuwen and Huang Yijun then brought the full orchestra together for a vibrant and celebratory conclusion.

The ensemble brought together a fuller Chinese orchestral line-up across four instrumental sections: bowed strings, plucked strings, winds and percussion.
Part of the 4th London International Chinese Music Festival, presented at Holy Sepulchre London on 27 August 2026.

Sound of the East in the West” Gala Concert Highlights 12|Qilian Soundscape – Dance of the Sand《祁连音画·舞沙》

Composed by Yaobo Lu for dizi and piano, Qilian Soundscape – Dance of the Sand《祁连音画·舞沙》evoked the vast landscapes of Qilian and the shifting movement of windblown sand.

The bright, agile voice of the dizi met the depth and power of the piano, creating a vivid musical dialogue shaped by flowing melodies, rhythmic energy and contrasting tonal colours.

“Sound of the East in the West” Gala Concert Highlights 11|Extract from The Drunken Beauty《贵妃醉酒》

This extract from the traditional Beijing Opera classic The Drunken Beauty《贵妃醉酒》brought the distinctive vocal expression and theatrical character of Chinese opera to the concert stage.

The expressive singing was supported by the penetrating melodic voice of the jinghu and the precise rhythmic accents of traditional percussion, revealing the close relationship between voice and instruments in Beijing Opera.
