The past fortnight or so with the JSB Ensemble has been one of the most fantastic experiences of my musical life so far! What an honour to meet every one of these incredible, passionate, hard-working individuals and what a privilege to work alongside them to bring Bach’s beautiful masses to life.
It’s quite incredible how quickly you can build a community (although rehearsing for 8 hrs a day does help…) and how music can bring all sorts of people together.
To play the music I love as part of the @bachfeststuttgart , in Winnenden and in the Bachkirche in Arnstadt is a nerdy historical performer’s dream come true. Thank you @bachakademiestuttgart !

It’s been a real treat to get to know this beautiful bit of Bach more closely this week. It’s a piece of music that I grew up listening to so I’m really pleased that I get to play it and enjoy in a new way. It is, of course, not written for double bass, so can be a bit awkward and tricksy at times. It’s also a bit hard to place this part without the other melodic part (I rush a lot in the middle section!!) but I’m delighted to accept this different kind of challenge. For now, I hope you enjoy this clip of me playing it after about a week of working on it. I do love playing in the big bass room. It makes you feel very grand…

Feeling very lucky to have been a part of another fantastic year at @vivastrings ! Courses like this were so instrumental for my development as a player and as a lover of music when I was a kid. I wouldn’t be the musician I am today without them, so it is always an absolute honour to be able to pay that forward!

Introducing “V-mail”, the first ever cup-based messaging system for young musicians in Salisbury…

Frank working hard at the tuck shop…

@xenolav doing the job that no one wants to do (untangling bunting)… but doing it very happily and gracefully!

Repping some face paint collectively designed by some of the young musicians. Vogue editorial coming soon, I think…

Mess made by crafty young musicians. Lovely to see! But a pain to clear up…

Rehearsals for the staff Talent Show entry are taken very seriously by the entire team.

Another jam-packed term at RCM is over! It really was a very varied one this time around. Thank you to everyone who asked me to do stuff and who gave me their time and skills when I asked! You’re all absolutely brilliant.

Yesterday’s gig down in Folkestone was a lovely reminder of the joy of making music. Being able to set up camp on harbour arm and get people up and dancing is an absolute privilege and, for me, what a being a musician is all about; spreading joy!
.
The silliness of the odd miscommunication (like the singer and I expecting different things from the structure at the beginning of this video!) and the pure excitement of when everyone plays in sync (like the ending- we were deciding it on the spot..!) are both wonderful things to experience. I love my job..!
