Artist Introduction - Ula Fung
@ulafungstudio

Ula strongly believes that painting is an independent language. Her practice wanders through thoughts and emotions hidden within her mind, as well as her physical reactions. They can be fleeting thoughts — much like the subconscious mind uncovered within dreams. At other times, she dedicates effort to researching these ideas and emotions, delving into other texts to extend these thoughts or seek answers. Then, there are times when the painting itself becomes the text used to clarify them.

When painting, she is repeatedly responding to the artwork itself. The focus is not on expressing a single issue, recreating a specific moment, or establishing a singular self-identity. She cares about painting as a medium and the spirituality of painting itself. This does not mean her work lacks subject matter.

The work moves between abstraction and figuration. Much like in daily life, where we often believe we are seeing the whole truth when we actually only perceive fragments — gaps that our minds fill in through Gestalt Completion. Her works function in much the same way, inviting the audience to draw from their own experiences to fill in those blank spaces.

I’m delighted to announce that my painting, Madonna and Pandora with her apple from his image-repertoire, will be exhibiting at the Whitaker Open this year!

Exhibition Dates: Saturday, 17th October – Sunday, 13th December 2026

💛

Title: Madonna and Pandora with her apple from his image-repertoire
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions 140cm x 90cm

This painting explores the “Madonna-whore complex.” Whether as a Madonna or a whore, the figures are merely roles arranged for her by the man within his own mind. Her imagery is mutable, yet entirely dictated by his needs, selected from his image-repertoire, thereby reducing her — a living, breathing person —into a mere signifier. As Roland Barthes writes: “Confronting each of these incidents (what ‘befalls’ him), the amorous subject draws on the reservoir (the thesaurus?) of figures, depending on the needs, the injunctions, or the pleasures of his image-repertoire. taken in The Whitaker - Rossendale Museum and Art Gallery by @ulafungstudio

Ula asks:

During your artist residency in my studio, we talked a lot about whether beauty is subjective or objective. I completely disagreed with you at first, but now I think we’ve reached a solid middle ground. Could you share your perspective on this again? by @ulafungstudio

Breathing

These painting has slowly changed over the past two years. In parallel with my own experiences and emotions, they have gone through several major reworkings, and for now I call this current state “finished”.

In this era, we have become very used to deconstructing everything - language, power, the body, even love and relationships. When everything is broken into fragments, we gradually lose the things we once believed in. It also becomes harder to piece these fragments back together into a shape we can rely on to live with.
At the same time, we feel a desperate need to confirm our identity labels. These identities become the tools for us to find our position in the society. But these identities often do not grow or come naturally from a stable and independent self; they are formed through relationships, through being seen, and through mutual recognition.

In these two paintings, I intentionally keep an open and ambiguous attitude - searching for liberty within structure, and reorganising within deconstruction.

Through this process I began to rethink what painting means to me. It is no longer just a question about a single essence, but something that can both grow with its own subjectivity and also hold emotional projection.

In the coming days, I will also share the individual pieces with some close-ups. Keep your eyes open 💛 by @ulafungstudio
