Your business can go bankrupt without your brand becoming worthless.

This week on ECHELON, we’re examining the business of brand equity through luxury, design, and commerce.

From LVMH and Paravel to Audemars Piguet and a million-dollar branding contract in New York City, we’re exploring what makes a brand valuable beyond the products it sells.

A successful brand and a successful business can be two different things.

I’m sure you’ve heard 17,900 times on this app that mindset is everything. Well, they aren’t wrong.

Have you heard of the white couch theory? It’s one of those things that prove you only need to give yourself permission to want more…to build the life you love.

Who gets to decide what counts as culture? The people creating it, or the institutions that recognize it?

A Chanel runway debut that began with secondhand clothing in Lagos. Ralph Lauren recognizing the collectors who helped shape Polo’s identity. Dame Pat McGrath becoming part of Louis Vuitton’s visual history. And Erewhon’s permanent arrival at LACMA.

Four stories. One conversation about creative authorship, cultural influence, and the relationship between brands and the people who give them meaning.

Because a brand can carefully construct its identity, but culture has a way of deciding what that identity becomes.

Four Rolex watches sold for nearly $50 million. Dior sent its guests walnuts. Singapore reimagined the Little Red Dot. A Houston gala put its guests inside a Monet. And a museum dedicated to storytelling became the setting for someone’s next chapter.

Different industries. Same question:
What are we inviting people to become part of?

This week, ECHELON looks at the growing value of participation. The objects, spaces and experiences that give people more than something to see, buy or visit...giving them evidence that they were there.

•THE LEXICON•

PATINA
The surface character an object develops through age, use and exposure.

VISUAL VERNACULAR
The recognizable visual language through which a culture, place or community communicates its identity.

AUTHORSHIP
The act or condition of shaping meaning, narrative or outcome.

SOFT BRAND
A hospitality model that allows an independent hotel to retain much of its individual identity while accessing the distribution, loyalty programs and infrastructure of a larger hotel group.

Working on a brand identity today and I needed to go to my bookshelf for some inspiration…maybe a little reference. Pulled @draplin ‘Pretty Much Everything’ book off the shelf and yeah, right call!

What does growth look like when identity is the asset?

McLaren went into its own archive to refine its identity. Gucci challenged an assumption about provenance. St. John handed nearly 65 years of history to a new creative director. Conran and Right Hat entered larger organizations without surrendering their identities. And BRABUS took its design language somewhere entirely new.

How much can a brand change while remaining unmistakably itself?
