Making something good is one thing. Building a successful business around it is another.

Here are 5 things to think about:

1. DEMAND — Do people actually want it?

Just because you love your product doesn't mean there's a market for it. Who is your customer? What problem are you solving? Are people actually willing to pay for it?

2. DISCOVERY — How will people find you?

The best product means nothing if nobody knows it exists. Where are your customers? How will you reach them? Why would they choose you over someone else?

3. MATHS — Do the numbers work?

Sales don't equal profit. What does it cost to make and sell your product? How much do you actually keep? How many do you need to sell just to break even?

4. CONSISTENCY — Can you deliver it repeatedly?

Doing something well once is easy. Doing it well every time is the challenge. Can you maintain quality as you grow? Can someone else deliver the same experience without you?

5. RETENTION — Why would they come back?

Getting customers is only half the battle. What makes them return? Is it the product, the experience, the relationships? Are you giving them a reason to choose you again?

A good product might get people through the door.

A good business gives them a reason to stay, return and tell others.

You don't need experience to start.

You need to start to get the experience.

Try it. Make the mistakes. Learn. Adjust. Try again.

There are some things you'll only ever learn by doing.

Got an idea you’ve been sitting on? Stop waiting for everything to be perfect.

1. Simplify it.

What’s the MVP? The smallest version of your idea you can actually execute? Work with what’s already in your hands. It doesn’t need to be the final version, just something real enough to test.

2. Minimise the risk.

Starting doesn’t mean risking everything. Pre-sell it. Borrow equipment. Get things sponsored. Test it for a day instead of committing to a year. Make the risk small enough that you can survive being wrong.

3. Set a date.

This might be the most important one. “Someday” is easy to keep moving. A date turns someday into this day. Once there’s a deadline, decisions have to be made and things have to get done.

4. Try it.

It might work. It might not. Most likely, some parts will and some won’t. You can improve something that exists. It’s pretty hard to improve something you never started.
