We had a beautiful workshop session with students at the @rietveld_jewellery orientation week, playing the game, drawing, getting closer to our roots and witnessing each other through words. Exactly 10 years ago this day I meet with @clem__edwards and #alaaabuasad at @dutchartinstitute , I found joy in their mirror through all these years. Alaa and our friendship sprouted into a book, travelled around the world, took us to mother tongues of others, and today (a full circle moment) Clem invited us to the jewellery department. Een ontmoeting met het wezen van de Soefi, met Ulufer Çelik en Lizelot de Stigter. Deze middag en avond geeft je de kans om het wezen van de Soefi in jezelf te ontdekken.
De Soefi leeft in het hart, innig verbonden met de ziel waar het meest intieme en het meest universele zich verenigen. Alles draait om de Liefde.
De Liefde komt tot leven in ons en wordt tot bevrijdende kracht wanneer het hoofd zich neerlegt bij het Hart. Wanneer we ons tot ons hart wenden zijn we innig verbonden met het sacrale.
Velen zijn geraakt door de mystieke overleveringen van bijvoorbeeld Rumi, Hafiz, en Attar. Hun woorden komen voort uit de directe ervaring van het Goddelijke, groter dan het menselijke verstand kan bevatten, maar het hart raakt in vervoering in deze diepe herkenning. Deze overdracht van de Soefi’s is tijdloos en universeel. We herkennen allemaal het wezenlijke.
Op deze dag nemen Lizelot en Ulufer je mee naar die diepte en innigheid in jezelf. Die doorvoelde herkenning van het Goddelijke, aan de hand van bewegingen, Sufi drumming en zang, gevoels-ervaringen, contemplatie en meditatie op gedichten, muziek, en Zikr (Soefi gebed), en ecstatische dans zoals het wervelen. taken in Rotterdam, Netherlands by @ulufercelik

In our summer res(t)idency at Greylight Projects organised and supported by Krista Jantowski, we will meditate on the concept of resting.

Come find us in Heerlen between August 15 and 31, or explore the surrounding areas with us as we forage for sumac.
What can resting mean while on a short-period residency? And, how can it be manifested in a work to be done in the future, knowing that the artists Alaa and Ulufer will use their time at the residency to prepare for a series of workshops they will carry and host next year? Alaa and Ulufer are not shying away from concealing the fact that “Days are getting shorter as I / we / you nap longer and go to bed earlier.” They don’t only do this literally, but they take it as a mantra for their time at the res(t)idency in Heerlen. Although it may occur to mean to “do nothing” – and nothing is wrong in doing nothing – but resting, of course, can’t mean that only. Resting is also the time for preparation, both of the body, mind, and sources of nourishment.

We are excited to welcome Alaa Abu Asad and Ulufer Çelik for a summer residency at Greylight Projects, where they will continue to develop their work on translation.

After meeting during their studies, Alaa Abu Asad and Ulufer Çelik started compiling lists of shared words in their mother tongues: vernacular Palestinian Arabic and Turkish. The work developed into a publishing project entitled I Love It When Translation Can Be Found To Agree With Our Weird Desires, combining text, drawings, performance and an artistic-pedagogical format used in informal and lively group sessions (from 2019 - ongoing). In their words: "It is a process that can last for good – as long as our friendship lives. We spend time together uttering words that are held in common and draw them, discovering whether they carry the same meaning, are slightly different, or are false friends."

The work embodies the relational act of translation, what Teju Cole once described as "literary analysis mixed with sympathy, a matter for the brain as well as the heart". Words in both languages that resemble in meaning and sound offer a spark of recognition, a familiarity through distance, while "false friends", words that resemble in sound but carry different meanings, are welcomed as a moment of inquiry or enjoyment. One word can lead to many other words, histories, anecdotes, memories, other word-worlds to carry and to be carried across.

Earlier this year, Alaa and Ulufer were participating artists in trans→actie, a lively co-creation project around multilingualism and translation, organized by Greylight Projects and ISK Emma, an international school for young people who have recently migrated to the Netherlands (and who brought an abundance of languages to the conversation). During their summer residency they will continue expanding this work, welcoming new conversation partners around the wor(l)ds that they have carried with them.
