Highlighting the students, faculty, and music of UMD Jazz

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Special thanks to Steve Carrington for spending time with our students and sharing how he built a successful career in both the medical field and music.

Our UMD music community is filled with some of the brightest artists anywhere, and Mr. Carrington showed how artistic pursuits don’t exist in isolation—they can overlap, reinforce one another, and ultimately lead to a life rooted in purpose, balance, and authentic artistic expression. @umdjazz #umdschoolofmusic @umdmusiced @umdartsforall #doublemajor #jazzeducation #masterclass by @umdjazz

Noon Jam this Friday in SOM 1208!
Tune of the Week: “Tune Up” by Miles Davis 🎺🔥

“Tune Up” is one of Miles Davis’ classic contrafacts and a staple in the jazz repertoire. Built on a series of ii–V–I progressions that cycle through multiple key centers, the tune is a perfect study in bebop language, voice-leading, and harmonic clarity. Because of its clean structure and elegant movement, it has become one of the most important tunes for developing improvisers.

About the Composer:
Miles Davis (1926–1991) is one of the most influential figures in jazz history—a visionary trumpeter, bandleader, and innovator who helped shape bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, and fusion. From Birth of the Cool to Kind of Blue to Bitches Brew, Miles continually reinvented the sound of jazz and the musicians around him.

Famous Recordings of “Tune Up”:
• Miles Davis – Miles: The New Miles Davis Quintet (1956)
• Miles Davis – Walkin’ (1957)
• Sonny Rollins – Moving Out (1954)
• Keith Jarrett Trio – various live performances
• Jacky Terrasson Trio – modern interpretations

Bring your horn, bring your sound, and let’s swing. See you Friday at noon! 🎶

🎭🎶 Huge thanks to Prof. Kenyatta Rogers for an unforgettable masterclass with the UMD Jazz Ensemble last week!

As a master of the theatrical arts, Prof. Rogers led us through powerful techniques that help us connect with each other before we share our art with the world. These exercises deepened our self-awareness and brought new intention and insight to our performances — making the music more personal, powerful, and real.

Thank you, Prof. Rogers, for inspiring us to lead with connection. 🙏✨
