Rising senior Karen Vera Sanchez always knew she wanted to be an engineer. That, combined with her passion for business, led her to IOE, where she could pursue both interests.

As an entrepreneurship minor and U-M IOE student pursuing the finance concentration, Vera Sanchez chose IOE for its holistic focus on finance, data analytics, optimization and human factors.

She has applied these skills as former co-president and current executive advisor of the entrepreneurship student org, @mpoweredentrepreneurship, where she helped open doors for more students on campus, and as founder of her own startup, working to expand access to higher-education financing back home in Mexico City and beyond.

In this Q&A, Karen shares the story behind @edubridgemx, the fintech startup she founded to provide flexible student loans to students in emerging markets.

Professor Leia Stirling wants to broaden how people think about ergonomics.

While many associate the field with adjusting office chairs and desks, Stirling has an expanded view. As the new director of the Center for Ergonomics (C4E), she is helping guide research examining how people interact with complex systems and emerging technologies, from augmented reality to exoskeletons, to improve health, safety and performance.

Our final summer recap features incoming junior Henok Yohannes (@henokyohannes926) interned at @childrensphila.

As a human factors and quality improvement intern, Henok helped optimize the radiology department's safety, quality and efficiency in interactions among humans, systems and devices.

Here, he used his knowledge of human factors and ergonomics, his ability to spot bottlenecks in various systems and processes and quantify them, and his willingness to adapt to learn how to communicate effectively with stakeholders and cross-functional teams.

"Always be proactive," he shared. "You will find way more opportunities and open more doors for yourself." Master's student Nolan Wertanen (@murkyturtle) studied abroad at Nagoya University in Japan through U-M International Programs in Engineering (IPE).

As part of Nagoya University's Summer Intensive Program (NUSIP), Nolan combined six weeks of automotive engineering with Japanese culture. Each day, he attended engineering seminars and classes in Japanese, ending with a final group presentation entirely in Japanese. He also toured manufacturing plants, research facilities and cultural landmarks like Kyoto, Tokyo and Mount Fuji.

Each lecture connected back to previous classes, with parallels to safety engineering, sustainability engineering, linear algebra and ergonomics. However, the lectures and Toyota manufacturing plant visits, especially in IOE 425: Lean Manufacturing and Services, expanded on the course, with opportunities to see the Toyota Production System in action and to visit the Toyota Kaikan Museum and Toyota Commemorative Museum.

This was the last course he needed to complete his degree — congrats, Nolan! A group of five people standing and smiling in a hallway, with one person holding a phone. The background shows a sign labeled "MAP & INFORMATION." by @umichioe
