In 2018, an interdisciplinary team of University of Minnesota researchers published a study concluding that oral bacteria removed not only sugars on teeth, but phosphate from the mouth as well, making it a friendly environment for decay-causing bacteria.

Since then, the team, which includes professor of pediatric dentistry Rob Jones, DDS, PhD, has continued to research possible ways oral bacteria can be managed over time. Now they’ve published a major paper in the Journal of Medical Microbiology, detailing their study of the bacterium Rothia dentocariosa, which they found accumulates phosphate when a tooth is demineralizing.

Treating chronic pain requires more than technical expertise. Every resident in the School of Dentistry's Orofacial Pain Residency Program completes a mindfulness course through the Earl E. Bakken Center for Spirituality & Healing.

The benefits of the course are twofold, helping residents to navigate the emotional demands of caring for patients with chronic pain and reinforcing the program’s whole-person approach to care.
