What is July 4th to a Black American? Not much. While others celebrate 250 years of “freedom,” we know the hypocrisy and contradictions of a country built with our ancestors’ hands on stolen land. Until further notice…we will be twirling toward our freedom, reparations, justice and equality that has been promised with empty words and performative gestures but never really delivered in actions.We must always remember that our joy is an act of resistance and taking up space is part our resilience. Collectively, we are the solutions we seek. We have BEEN the disrupters who survive and thrive DESPITE every odd. Searching for a savior for the next 250+? The power of manifestation. This is young me - a Black girl from Baltimore who started a tutoring company for underserved youth to help my community. I ended up winning the Youth Entepreneur of the Year Award from @nfte (Wow! Ya’ll are still making impact years later!!!). My mom and my aunt traveled to NYC with me to accept the award. It was one of the most memorable experiences and a signal to a young me what might be possible. She dreamed it but who would know …we’d be here today — a successful entrepreneur and the founder of @unapologeticcommunications chasing our dreams and catching them all in a net we crafted. Manifest. Vision. Curate. Create. Find your supportive community and let go of those who don’t believe. Write it down. Dream it. Then go BE it. As a proud @barackobama alum and Founding Member of the Obama Foundation, it has been so incredible to be invited to the Obama Presidential Center ahead of its opening this month (June 19 - Juneteenth). I am overwhelmed to witness it all come to life and light our legacy - a symbol that our work was not in vain, a love letter to hope, and a testament to the vision of our administration. May our light continue to shine, inspire and educate the generations to come. What an honor nationally, a massive contribution to the surrounding community in Chicago and the world - OUR history that can never be erased. This feels like home - a safe, liberating place where our dreams go to thrive and our ancestors hopes are revived. Yes, we did - and we will. I love you @barackobama and @michelleobama - words are not enough to truly capture what you mean.
