Yesterday I married Jasmin & Konstantin at the Capri Theatre, Goodwood, one of Adelaide's last great Art Deco cinemas. Built in 1941, it's home to the "Mighty Wurlitzer", a 29-rank organ that rises up from under the stage floor. Played with aplomb by John Slater. 🎩

Huge lovers of vintage style and classic film, this couple knew it was the only place to say their vows. Rather than speak at length in front of their guests (they confessed that it wasn't their happy place) they shared their feelings in a short film, then took to the stage to make it official. 💕

After almost 18 years as a celebrant and 1000+ couples married, this one is right up there with my all-time favourites. 🥰

Michael & Tess really thought through their wedding day timeline & prioritised time with their people. 🥰

And attending their own cocktail hour was just 1 part of their overall strategy. They also:

*exchanged private vows before their ceremony so they could really take their time and drink it in
*they had their wedding party sit down so they could enjoy the ceremony too
*they had a self-serve gin station during cocktail hour, think lots of fresh fruit & herb garnishes
*they booked a doughnut van for late night snacks.

Our brides Caitlin and Maxine did not want an aisle walk.

They wanted to walk into their ceremony with everyone they love. So as their Adelaide wedding planner, I built their day at Marybank Estate the other way round.

Their couple photos were done before a single guest arrived, because time with their people mattered more than time in front of a camera. Guests walked straight into a canapé and cocktail hour, and the two of them spent it mingling instead of waiting out of sight.

When it was time, everyone walked into the ceremony space together, favourite drink in hand. Afterwards came a second canapé hour, again spent with their guests, before everyone sat down for dinner.

My job was to make their version run beautifully, holding every timing, every supplier and every family photo so the whole day could be about connection. Your wedding never has to follow the traditional order.

Because what's actually on your wishlist is an awesome, connected ceremony with someone who gets you and can relate to your guests, right? 🤷‍♀️

So here's what actually separates a good celebrant from a great one:

🎤 It's about how they write (to an extent), but more than that, how they read a room and can react on the fly.

👀 It's how they make you feel seen, but further, how they reflect that back authentically in your ceremony.

🌟 And it's how they address your guests when you're not even in earshot, like they are your PR agent and boundary protector.

It takes a chat with a celebrant to work out if you're a good fit for each other. But well worth the investment of 30mins. 👏

Ask how they get to know you before the big day.
Ask how they handle nerves, weather, a crying grandparent, a guest who won't sit down.
