Sign up for the last few Fall 2026 Fab Nights, held Tuesday afternoons at 5:30pm! Try a new skill and take home what you make (or gift it to a friend) ✨️

Weld a Flower, shown here, has always been one of our most popular Fab Nights and is an easy way to learn this process.

Weld a Halloween Luminary: Learn welding and either make a wireframe pumpkin out of metal rods or weld together a spooky candle holder 🎃

This class will provide an introduction to MIG (metal-inert gas) welding. We'll talk about welding, what it is, and how it works. Then we'll get into practicing tacks and beads. Make either a wireframe pumpkin out of bent steel rod or a small light box (a 'luminary', meant to hold a small candle light) using MIG welding.

💙 These workshops are for active UNC Asheville students, faculty, & staff of any skill level to learn tools safely while making a fun project!

Fab Nights are a series of weekly 3-hour workshops provided by the UNCA STEAM Studio. In each session, participants receive our general safety orientation, as well as an in-depth tutorial for the processes and tools required for each weeks' project. Fab Nights are a great way to learn tools and machines at STEAM without taking one of our for-credit STM classes.

✨ Metal Nametags ✨ STEAM Studio Student Workers used our new @xtool.official F2 Ultra UV laser to engrave their own custom metal nametags using scrap pieces they cut!

Our CO2 laser can mark but not fully engrave (and more) so we are incredibly grateful for this new addition to our @unc_asheville campus makerspace 💙

UNC Asheville Students, Faculty, & Staff: Sign up for our Fab Night workshops to make something while learning studio safety and a specific tool or process 💙

Pre-registration is required but experience is not!

This Tuesday's workshop showcases graphic design for laser engraving to create your own custom stamp! These are great to decorate paper projects like handmade letters, art, and more. Either make one big stamp or several small ones.

Ticket sales close on the day of ~5 hours prior to each start time of 5:30 pm. All costs are included in the ticket price ($15+). If the cost is prohibitive, please contact us!

Our Applied STEAM class at UNC Asheville had fun designing chairs made from salvaged PVC, removed from local river cleanups by Asheville Greenworks after Hurricane Helene!

We are rooted in making-based education and open to @unc_asheville students across every discipline. Students often have opportunities to collaborate with faculty, visiting artists, and industry partners.

Our three areas of focus: academic classes, special projects, and community outreach, are designed to reinforce and inspire each other! ✨️

Mel Chin’s Wake sculpture was officially unveiled in New York City’s Times Square on July 11, 2018. Our team worked around the clock (in shifts) July 8-11 to complete the installation.

Designed, engineered, sculpted, and fabricated in our studio with students and faculty from mechatronics engineering, art, and other disciplines.

This summer was STEAM Studio's first Faculty Fellowship! Out of many stellar applications, we selected 3 UNC Asheville faculty to get hands-on training in the shop and prototype a course to teach here at STEAM over the next year!

Our 2026 Fellows are: Dr. Ayelet Even-Nur from English, Dr. Samer Traboulsi from History, and Dr. Casey King from Environmental Science and the Office of Sustainability. They (and we!) are so excited to embed new project capabilities into their department offerings.

We supported faculty curricula development using technology-infused, hands-on, and project-based learning. The goal was to provide the time, space, and resources for them to teach a new class at STEAM Studio, expanding the breadth of academic departments utilizing our studio.

Fellows are now able to:
✔️ Safely use metal & woodworking equipment
✔️ Understand MIG welding & lumber dimensioning
✔️ Use digital software
✔️ Develop a class project and curriculum for teaching in the next year, including project materials and pricing, machine/tool lists, safety protocols, timelines

Our amazing student workers and staff have been hard at work this week making cool things for our silent auction to support the SkillSet program scholarship fund.

@skillsetprogram provides summer camps and afterschool programs teaching kids how to use tools to design and build their future.

We never want finances to be a barrier to this high impact programming. Join us June 4th 5pm-7pm at STEAM Studio to bid on some amazing stuff, celebrate our 8th year of programming, and help keep summer camps and afterschool programs school programs affordable.
