Join artist and professor Giselle Beiguelman this Thursday for a presentation rethinking memorialization through botany, artificial intelligence, and women’s histories. Date: September 17th, 2026 Time: 5:15 P.M. Location: Hyde Hall, University Room This presentation examines the emergence of botanical forms of memorialization through a series of artistic projects addressing colonial legacies, botanical taxonomies, and the historical erasure of women from the fields of art, science, and ancestral knowledge. Drawing on Memória da Amnésia (Memory of Amnesia), Botannica Tirannica, and Poisonous, Noxious and Suspicious, it explores the role of botany and artificial intelligence in developing reparative forms of remembrance. Giselle Beiguelman is an artist and Full Professor at the Faculty of Architecture, Urbanism and Design of the University of São Paulo (FAU-USP), where she leads the FAPESP-funded Digital Collections Research Project. Her work investigates the intersections of memory, archives, artificial intelligence, decolonial practices, and digital cultures. She is the author of Memória da Amnésia (Memory of Amnesia) and Políticas da Imagem: vigilância e resistência na dadosfera (Politics of the Image: Surveillance and Resistance in the Datasphere). Her works are held in the collections of ZKM, the Jewish Museum Berlin, Pinacoteca de São Paulo, MAR Rio, MAC USP, KADIST, among others. Her recent work explores botanical taxonomies, AI-generated images, and reparative approaches to histories erased by colonialism, patriarchy, and data colonialism. Sponsored by the Institute for the Arts and Humanities; the Vice-Provost’s Office for Global Affairs; INSITE Latin America and the Caribbean; INSITE Europe; the Department of Geography and the Environment; the Department of History; the Department of Art and Art History; and the Department of History at King’s College London. The lecture is part of “The Art of Memory and Repair” collaborative project organized by members of the UNC-Chapel Hill community and King’s Past at King’s College London. by @uncgeography

Understanding our past is critical for building a better future; that is the mindset that guides our thinking at the Environmental Justice Oral History Project. And we’re bringing that perspective to NYC Climate Week on Monday September 21 at 4:15pm, for a conversation on the role of history-telling as an educational, storytelling, and movement facilitation tool. In collaboration with the same partners at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who made our Mothers of the Movement collection possible, we’ll sit down with movement leaders, student researchers, and oral history experts to understand the importance of oral history conversation as a pedagogical tool and a way to inspire intergenerational collaboration at this important moment for environmental justice. Featuring: • Vernice Miller-Travis – VP at Metropolitan Group, Co-founder of WE ACT for Environmental Justice, and foundational movement leader, including as a researcher for the 1987 Toxic Wastes and Race Report • Professor Shorna Allred – Susan R. Wolf Professor in UNC’s Department of Geography and founding partner of the Mothers of the Movement oral history collection • Shreeya Patel – Student oral historian, researcher, and PhD student at UNC Moderated by EJOHP board member, seasoned oral historian, and founder Dandelyons Studios, Ambar Wortham, WEDG, and including opening remarks from one of our undergraduate oral historians, Lily Mefford, this event will close our formal Stories that Move program with a deep dive into the importance of recognizing those who came before us in this work. by @uncgeography
