Local history nugget: In the absence of an organized police force, the responsibilities of a citizen in Colonial-era Lancaster often included serving as a night watchman. These volunteers patrolled the darkened streets, kept vigilant for fires, and watched for suspicious activity during the night hours. In 1810, a series of suspected arson incidents prompted Lancastrians to hold a town meeting, where they appointed a committee of sixteen men to form a patrol and compile a list of borough residents for potential service. Anyone unwilling to serve or to provide a “decent man” as a substitute faced a fine of one dollar per night.

Equipped with lanterns and watchmen’s rattles to signal fires, these patrolmen had the authority to arrest and jail vagrants, disorderly individuals, and anyone found in the streets at unusual hours without a satisfactory explanation. Volunteer fire companies often advocated for the hiring of regular night watchmen due to the persistent fire hazards posed by open fireplaces, blacksmith shops, candles, oil lamps, and rows of wooden buildings and stables. by @unchartedlancaster

Not-so-Fun Fact: In 'An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States,' Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz suggests that Indigenous populations in the Americas may have numbered up to 100 million before 1492. In North America alone, estimates of the pre-1492 population range between 5 million and 20 million. By 1620, these numbers had tragically plummeted—reduced by as much as 90 percent—due primarily to disease and acts of genocide. In North America, the population dwindled to an estimated 1-2 million. by @unchartedlancaster

🐻 Did you know that one of Elizabethtown’s oldest buildings was once a bustling colonial tavern?

Standing at the corner of North Market and Hummelstown Streets is the former Sign of the Bear Tavern, built in 1745 by Captain Thomas Harris. Nearly 300 years later, it remains one of the borough’s most remarkable historic landmarks!

Harris originally built a log cabin on the property around 1730. By 1738, he was operating a public house that welcomed travelers, merchants, and wagon drivers passing through colonial Pennsylvania.

In 1753, Barnabas Hughes purchased the property. Ten years later, he laid out a new town and named it in honor of his wife, Elizabeth. Elizabethtown was born!

Although extensively remodeled over the centuries, the former tavern still stands as a reminder of the community’s colonial beginnings.

🍺 From brothels to breweries! Did you know that Our Town Brewery sits on the site of what was once considered Lancaster's finest house of ill repute? 😲

Long before craft beer was flowing at the corner of North Prince and West Walnut Streets, the property at 252 North Prince Street was home to a high-end brothel operated by Edna Carson.

Welcome to Lancaster in 1913, when the Red Rose City had a reputation as a "wide open" town where drinking, gambling, and prostitution flourished. Police and city officials often looked the other way!

But Carson's establishment was no ordinary brothel.

Catering to wealthy gentlemen, the lavish residence featured plush rugs, expensive furniture, fine artwork, and elegantly dressed women in evening gowns. A maid and cook attended to the household, creating an atmosphere more like an upscale hotel.

The business had deep roots. Before Carson took over in 1907, Alice Adams had operated the establishment for roughly five decades!

In 1913, undercover investigators arrived in Lancaster to document the city's thriving vice industry. What they discovered was astonishing.

💰 According to one housekeeper, Carson reportedly earned $700 per week, equivalent to more than $21,000 in 2024 dollars!

Even Franklin & Marshall College students were familiar with the place. In February 1913, four students reportedly broke down the door after being refused admission, an incident that landed them before a judge!

Despite a crackdown on prostitution beginning in 1914, Carson's upscale establishment apparently escaped the raids targeting less affluent brothels.

Of course, behind the luxurious furnishings was a darker reality. Many women working in Lancaster's sex trade faced exploitation, violence, and financial uncertainty.

Over the following century, the property served several other purposes before becoming Our Town Brewery.

🍻 The next time you're enjoying a drink there, consider the extraordinary history beneath your feet!

🎂 #HappyBirthday, Daniel Boone! 🎂

On November 2, 1734, one of America's most legendary frontiersmen was born right here in Pennsylvania!

Long before Daniel Boone became famous for blazing trails through the Appalachian Mountains and helping open Kentucky to European American settlement, he was a young boy exploring the forests and streams of southeastern Pennsylvania's Oley Valley in present-day Berks County.

Boone was the sixth of eleven children born to Squire and Sarah Boone, a Quaker family whose journey to America began in England. His father arrived in Pennsylvania in 1717, eventually settling on 250 acres in the Oley Valley.

Growing up in the Pennsylvania wilderness, young Daniel developed a love for the outdoors. He learned to hunt, track animals, navigate forests, and survive in rugged terrain. These early experiences helped shape the skills that later made him one of America's most celebrated explorers.

In 1750, the Boone family moved south toward North Carolina's Yadkin Valley. But Daniel's adventures were only beginning!

By 1775, Boone was leading men through the Cumberland Gap, helping establish the famous Wilderness Road into Kentucky. That same year, he founded Boonesborough, a frontier settlement that played an important role during the American Revolution.

Of course, these lands were already home to Native American peoples, and the westward expansion Boone helped facilitate brought conflict and displacement.

Boone eventually moved to Missouri, where he died in 1820 at age 85.

🏡 Did you know you can still visit the Daniel Boone Homestead near Birdsboro, Pennsylvania, where the famous frontiersman spent his childhood?

But how did the Boone family end up in Pennsylvania? And how did a boy growing up in the Oley Valley become an American legend?

When you think of hydroelectric power in Lancaster County, Holtwood and Safe Harbor probably come to mind. But did you know that more than a century ago, another hydroelectric dam harnessed the waters of Pequea Creek?

Here's a fascinating photograph showing the dam for the Colemanville Water & Power Company under construction!

Built in 1905 near the Colemanville Covered Bridge, this power station used both water and steam to generate electricity. Its primary purpose was to supply power to the Lancaster & York Furnace Street Railway Company, which operated an electric trolley line connecting Millersville to Pequea. The station also supplied electricity to the nearby village of Pequea, approximately 2.5 miles away.

The dam itself was constructed using a timber framework filled with rocks and backed with earth. It created a reservoir stretching approximately 1.1 miles upstream. Water flowing through the powerhouse turned turbines capable of generating a combined 550 horsepower!

Interestingly, this wasn't the first industrial operation at the site. As far back as 1828, ironmaster Edward Coleman had established a forge, rolling mill, and slitting mill along this same stretch of Pequea Creek.

Although the powerhouse and dam are long gone, remnants of the operation can still be spotted near the Colemanville Covered Bridge. Old stone foundations and sections of the waterways that once carried water to and from the turbines offer clues to this forgotten chapter of Lancaster County's industrial history.

Want to see what the powerhouse looked like, discover what happened to the dam in 1926, and learn where you can still spot its ruins today?

November is Native American Heritage Month. In honor of that, I will share various stories and legends associated with the Indigenous people who first lived here. Here is a story about the great chief of the Onondaga Nation and prominent diplomat, Canassatego.

It was here in Lancaster during the summer of 1744 that Canassatego gave a famous speech that would influence the drafting of the United States Constitution forty years later and is forever immortalized in the Great Seal of the United States on the back of the dollar bill.

Canassatego recommended that the colonies adopt a form of government similar to the Iroquois by forming a confederacy. To illustrate his point, Canassatego pulled a single arrow from his quiver and, with little effort, broke it in two. Next, he grabbed six arrows representing the Six Nations of the Iroquois. Canassatego tried to break the bundle of arrows but was unsuccessful. by @unchartedlancaster

👻 Does a granite statue really come to life and wander Lancaster Cemetery after dark?

Today's #HauntedLancaster tale takes us to one of Lancaster City's oldest burial grounds, where a tragic love story has inspired generations of ghostly legends!

Founded in 1846, Lancaster Cemetery is the final resting place of many prominent Lancastrians. But perhaps its most mysterious resident is Augusta Bitner, whose granite monument has inspired some truly chilling tales.

According to legend, Augusta was preparing to marry a man her wealthy parents despised. On the morning of her wedding, a bitter argument erupted between Augusta and her mother. Distraught, the young bride fled her bedroom, tripped over her wedding gown, and tumbled down the staircase, breaking her neck!

Her devastated parents supposedly commissioned a granite statue bearing their daughter's likeness.

But the story doesn't end there!

Visitors claim the statue occasionally sheds REAL TEARS. Others insist that after sunset, the figure steps down from its pedestal and wanders among the tombstones, its eyes glowing an eerie green!

Adding to the mystery is a haunting inscription on her monument:

"Could love have kept her?"

But what if this tragic wedding-day story isn't true at all? 🤔

Historical records reveal a VERY different account of Augusta's life and death. She didn't die on her wedding day, and she didn't even die in Lancaster County!

So who was Augusta Bitner, and how did her monument become the centerpiece of one of Lancaster's most enduring ghost stories?

In August 1973, several Lancaster County Amish farmers encountered a monster-like creature. Eyewitnesses described the beast as the size of a heifer with gray fur and a white mane. It had tiger-like fangs and curved horns like a billy goat. It ran upright on long legs and had long, grizzly claws.

The first to encounter the beast were two brothers whose team of horses panicked, throwing both boys to the ground when the creature approached their hay wagon. Fortunately, neither were injured.

The following day, a man was cutting weeds on his farm about five miles from the previous incident when he heard a fierce roar and turned to see a monster with horns and a tail charging in his direction. He raised his scythe to defend himself, only to have the implement ripped from his hands. At that point, the man wisely decided to turn both cheeks to the monster and escaped as fast as he could run.

He returned later with investigators only to find that the beast allegedly ate the wooden parts of the scythe.

A day later, a woman was feeding poultry on a farm midway between the two earlier incidents when she heard a commotion and turned to see the creature snatching a goose in each of its hands. She bravely ran toward the thing, waving her apron. The woman recovered one of her geese when the creature threw it at her, knocking her to the ground. The interloper escaped with the remaining bird in hand.
