“Failure is nothing but change, and change is the law of nature.” — Marcus Aurelius
Thank you.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me, believed in me, challenged me, and even doubted me along the way.
I’ve learned that failure isn’t the opposite of success. It’s part of it.
Every mistake has taught me something. Every setback has forced me to grow. Every time something didn’t work out the way I planned, I had a choice: let it define me or learn from it and keep moving forward.
Growth rarely happens when everything is comfortable. It happens when plans fall apart, when you’re forced to adapt, and when you have to look at yourself and admit there are things you can do better.
I’m thankful for the wins, but I’m just as thankful for the failures. They’ve made me more patient, more resilient, and more appreciative of how far I’ve come.
There’s still a lot of work ahead and plenty more mistakes to make.
Keep learning. Keep growing. Keep moving forward.
The work is never done. taken in Corvo Martial Arts Richardson by @uncletonyjj

“The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” — Marcus Aurelius
There are moments when it feels like all hope is lost.
When nothing is going your way. When the setbacks keep coming. When you’ve given everything you have and still don’t see a way forward.
That’s when you find out who you really are.
Jiu Jitsu teaches us this every day. Sometimes you’re exhausted, stuck in a terrible position, and there seems to be no way out.
You don’t panic. You don’t quit.
You survive. You adjust. You keep working.
Life is no different.
When hope fades, discipline takes over.
Keep showing up.
Keep doing the work.
Keep moving forward.
The obstacle in front of you may be the very thing that builds the person you need to become.
Stay in the fight. taken in Corvo Martial Arts Richardson by @uncletonyjj

The Gentle Art.
Jiu Jitsu isn’t called gentle because it’s easy. It’s about learning to solve problems without relying on strength.
Leverage over power.
Timing over speed.
Technique over force.
Patience over panic.
It teaches you to stay calm under pressure, adapt, and keep moving forward.
And remember—the best way to get an underhook is to cup check your partner.
Technique is everything.

THE WORK IS NEVER DONE.

There is no finish line.

On the mat, there is always another detail to sharpen, another weakness to address, another position to understand. You can earn a black belt and quickly realize how much there still is to learn.

The same is true in life.

Being a good person isn’t something you accomplish once. It’s something you work at every day. It shows in how you treat people, how you handle adversity, how you respond when nobody is watching, and whether you continue holding yourself to a higher standard.

Business is no different.

You can build something successful, reach a goal, or have your best year yet, and the next morning the work is still there. There are people depending on you. Problems to solve. Standards to maintain. New ideas to pursue.

Seneca said:

“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”

You don’t become better by talking about it. You do the work.

Train when you need improvement.
Own your mistakes.
Keep your word.
Take care of your people.
Build something you’re proud of.
Then wake up tomorrow and do it again.

Success isn’t reaching a point where the work stops.

Success is becoming the kind of person who understands that the work is never done and welcomes it.

On the mat.
In business.
In life.

Keep working. Keep improving. by @uncletonyjj

Building Corvo was never easy.
There have been sacrifices behind everything we’ve built, time away from family, missed birthdays and events, money, early mornings, late nights, and countless hours trying to build something I believed in.
I’ve traveled across the country coaching athletes, often spending my own time and money just to be in their corner.
One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is that not everyone will give the same effort you’re willing to give them. You can’t want someone’s success more than they want it themselves.
Marcus Aurelius said:
“Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one.”
So I’ve learned to focus less on what people give back and more on the standard I choose to live by.
Because every once in a while, someone takes the opportunity and runs with it. They show up. They listen. They struggle, fail, come back, and keep working. Then one day, you get to watch them accomplish something they once thought was impossible.
Those people make the sacrifices worth it.
I could have started another business. I believe I could have taken this same drive and been successful doing something else. But I chose Jiu Jitsu because I had a passion for it and believed in what it could do for people.
Corvo was never supposed to be just a place to learn how to grapple. I wanted to build a place where people could test themselves, develop discipline and confidence, build relationships, and find out what they’re capable of.
I’ve learned that the goal isn’t to have everyone match your effort.
The goal is to make sure your effort means something when it reaches the right people.
That’s why I built Corvo.
And that’s why I’ll keep building. by @uncletonyjj

“No man is more unhappy than he who never faces adversity. For he is not permitted to prove himself.” Seneca

Do something hard today.

Not because you have to. Because you can.

Wake up early. Train when you’re tired. Lift something heavy. Run another mile. Have the difficult conversation. Start the project you’ve been avoiding. Choose discipline when comfort would be easier.

We spend so much of our lives trying to make everything comfortable, but comfort rarely shows us what we’re capable of.
Adversity does.

“What is not good for the hive is not good for the bee.”
— Marcus Aurelius
Somewhere along the way, we became far too focused on ourselves—our wants, our feelings, our recognition, and what we believe we deserve.
Maybe part of it came from the “everyone is a winner” mentality. We became afraid to tell people a simple truth:
Not everyone is elite. And that’s OK.
There is nothing wrong with being average. What’s wrong is expecting to be treated as exceptional when you haven’t done anything exceptional.
You don’t deserve special treatment because you believe you’re special. You don’t deserve different rules because the standard is inconvenient for you.
If being average bothers you, there’s a solution.
Put in the work.
Work harder. Be more disciplined. Become more dependable. Sacrifice. Improve your skills. Help the people around you. Earn your place.
Stop asking the world to lower the standard so you can feel exceptional.
The hive doesn’t exist for the individual bee. We all have a responsibility to contribute to something bigger than ourselves. by @uncletonyjj
