Hi, I’m Santo 👋🏽

I’m a PhD researcher + facilitator exploring awe as a collective force for transformation in a time of global collapse. My work weaves psychology, queer ecology, ritual, art + Indigenous philosophies that resist hyper-individualism.

Here I share research, reflections + experiments in collective awe…alongside updates on workshops, events + ways of gathering differently.

Finding awe through embodied practice with RMIT’s Landscape Studio - Queer Geologies x Quarry Pedagogies.

Guiding the group through an immersive practice. We gathered at the heart of a post-extractivist quarry on Gadubanud country, surrounded by the ancient expanse of the Otway Ranges. Here, we embraced the damp and moist conditions, moving and meditating in this inspiring landscape.

This is part 3 of the disconnection series. The first suspect was Descartes. The second was colonisation. This one is about something most people have never heard of: the enclosure of the commons. How shared land was fenced off, handed to the wealthy, and how that same logic went global and eventually went inward. Into our bodies. Into how we relate to each other. Into what we now call boundaries and self-care.

The thing that changed how I think about all of this: Indigenous peoples didn’t lose this knowledge. They’ve been holding it, practising it, fighting for it for tens of thousands of years. The reconnection we’re searching for already exists. It was never ours to discover.

What’s the name of the river nearest your home? Do you know whose Country you’re on?
Part 1 (Descartes) and Part 2 (Colonisation) are on the grid.

this morning i sat down with @awe.cast to talk about my research into collective awe: what happens when groups of people encounter something that exceeds their understanding. it was a beatiful and messy conversation and i’m excited to share it by @uncloudmind

The most uncomfortable thought? Everything is deeply mysterious, and we’ll never fully know.

We could sit with one another for a million years and still not understand the divine spark that lives in everything, in trees, storms, and the bones of the person next to us.

The experience of awe calls us to sit with this not-knowing. It reminds us that we can never see the whole picture and never fully understand.

It’s humbling and scary, but also incredibly exciting. In some way, it is even comforting. The beauty and terror of this mystery create music.

According to the ancient Pythagoreans, everything exists as music. The entire cosmos is moving with harmony. We are vibrations—different, beautiful, complex frequencies coming together, creating music. Diversity creates the dissonance and resonance that make this music possible.

Maybe awe helps us see life as it is: gorgeously harmonic and mysterious. Maybe it allows us to sense the veil beyond us, the beauty in all the parts of everything—and everyone—that we don’t know and will never truly know.

Maybe if we sit in the awe and terror of this not-knowing, we will find ourselves in the music of it all.

You are not separate from your body—you are your body. Your body is not separate from nature—it is nature. Your body is an ecosystem, an ecology, a living home. by @uncloudmind

On ancient maps, uncharted territories were marked with a warning: “Here Be Dragons.” These areas were strange, frightening, and beyond understanding thus avoided. In his essay 'Here Be Dragons', James Baldwin turns these dragons inward, urging us to consider our hidden and intimidating aspects as ‘dragons’—the parts we hide away because they feel overwhelming or unknown.

Baldwin suggests that these dragons are both scary and incredibly magical. They hold the potential for self-discovery and connection. Dragons embody mystery, magic, fear, and elation—elements of awe, something vast and unknown, larger than ourselves. We're humbled by their power. When we approach these ‘dragons’ with curiosity, we find the magic inside ourselves. Scary from afar but enchanting when up close. Here, we are connected in the murky, deep waters where these dragons lie. Here, the fear, joy, vulnerability, and mystery of our humanity intersect.

Baldwin writes, “Dragons may not have been here then, but they are certainly here now, breathing fire…” Today, we face external dragons, figures and forces that evoke fear and division in the world. We have every right to be afraid of them. But what of the dragons within us? What if we faced these inner dragons instead of fleeing from them, even befriended them? Would it unite us in a fierce, fiery, destructive, transformative change? by @uncloudmind

Is your spirituality helping you grow, or just hiding your problems?

Let’s find out how proper self-care is more than just feeling good. It encourages us to heal, think deeply, and take action. Together, we can learn how spirituality can help us make real life changes 🌿 by @uncloudmind
