An open love letter to my 30-year-old self:

Damisi, my love. I could not be more proud of you. You’ve made it to 30 — something that seemed like an impossible feat 2 years ago. Many times you didn’t even want it to happen. Now, you’re not disappointed to have made it here, and you’re even a little glad. A win is a win. 🩵

Your name, Oluwadamisi, means “the Lord spared my life.” The significance of that isn’t lost on me. I’ve often wondered why God kept you all those years ago when the doctors advised Mommy to abort you. Now, I wonder why He’s kept you to see 30 when your beautiful brother left this earth a mere 30 days before his 30th birthday. I don’t have an answer, but God knows.

I’m proud of you for slowly but surely letting go of control (mentally, because obviously you were never actually in control to begin with). I’m proud of you for opening yourself up to God again, no matter how small. I’m proud of you for embracing joy and laughter again, and no longer stifling it. I’m proud of you for daring to dream again, and embarking on new & challenging opportunities. I’m proud of you for being open and honest about your struggles, and creating a safe space for others to do the same. Your strength shines the brightest in those moments.

Baby girl, you were once barely surviving. Now— dare I say— you’re thriving. That doesn’t mean you don’t have your bad days/moments. That doesn’t mean you’re completely healed. It just means you’re making a conscious effort every day to create a life that you enjoy living, that holds lasting impact for others, and that Gbolu would be immensely proud of.

I used to be inspired by people like you. People who’ve gone through hell and come out on the other side still somewhat smiling. Now, it’s you I’m inspired by.

You coined 29 your “Gbolu Year,” and now that year will extend to the rest of your life as you continue prioritizing what matters the most. Keep going, Sis. You got it, and God got you.

January 15, 1993 — the day a legend was born. One who would become my big brother, bestie, personal comedian, partner-in-shenanigans, volleyball & ping pong coach/partner, confidante, and obviously— too good for this world. Gone entirely too soon in my opinion, but not without leaving behind a meaningful and unforgettable legacy.

My friends will know you. My husband will know you. My children will know you. My neighbors will know you. The world will continue to know you. And they will all have no choice but to love you. I will speak your name as often as I can. I will make jokes more and take life less seriously. I will hug and kiss more. I will hold on to memories more. I will laugh more. I will show more compassion and grace to unlikely candidates. I will prioritize making time & memories with those I love, and I will spare no expense to help those in need.

It comforts me to know that I showed you how much I loved and appreciated you during those last few weeks. You knew, without a shadow of a doubt that I was there for you. But… it was easy for me to do that because I didn’t know whether I was going to lose you and absolutely nothing else mattered.

The fact is, none of us know whether we’re going to lose each other at any point in time. I know that now more than I ever thought I knew it before. We gotta show that love and appreciation while we’re given the opportunity. Now. We HAVE to.

I miss you Gbo Dweeb Cake, G-Dub Faw, GW, Carson Stevens, GDove, GboSmiley, GB, Bub, Bro, Bae, Love, Sugar— Gbolu.

From now on I will know January 15th as Legacy Day.

A former mechanic just told us how to stop getting played at the shop! 🔧

We started Episode 7 with an icebreaker, and TJ Thomas, (@bigga2388) who spent 8 years as an auto mechanic, gave some useful advice.

Short version: it’s less about knowing everything, and more about knowing enough to not be caught off guard. Check your fluids. Learn what your brake pads should look like. And never feel pressured to say yes on the spot.

But here’s the thing — TJ didn’t just bring this energy to cars. He brought it to grief, to growth, to supporting his nephews, and to rebuilding his life after losing his big brother Champ in 2022.

The same man who said “pay attention before the problem gets bigger” is the same man who spent six months barely leaving his house after his brother died, and then chose, on his birthday, to take his life back.
