Junior Design Connect 2022 😃 A curated networking event for students and junior designers at Carmichael Lynch downtown Minneapolis. We had an amazing panel discussion and lots of great moments with great people. A huge thank you to everyone that attended and contributed. A special thank you to @lo_norton and the @carmichael_lynch team for assisting so much in not only the planing, but providing a great venue and supplying food and beverages. This weekend at Tennessee State University, @cornelbeard had the privilege of attending the ‘State of Black Design’ conference, an experience that was nothing short of beautiful, brilliant, and Black. The conference was a vivid tapestry of creativity, resilience, and community, reminding us all of the transformative power of design when it’s rooted in our true identities and experiences. Here are some of his key takeaways:

🌍 Create movements, not just moments - The importance of impactful, lasting change over fleeting successes.

🚀 Take the leap - Encouragement to embrace risks and venture into the unknown.

✨ Exist as is - A call to live authentically and proudly in our identities.

🤔 What do you stand for? - The significance of having and expressing clear values and beliefs in our work.

🎉 Celebrating identity - Urging us to reflect on and express what aspects of our identity we want to see celebrated.

🔍 Look beyond the surface - The necessity to seek out truth and inspiration beyond conventional sources.

✊🏾 Normalize expressing identity - Advocating for the acceptance and celebration of diverse identities.

🙌🏿 Acknowledge ancestors - A reminder to honor the contributions and sacrifices of those who came before us.

📚 Lived experience vs. cultural competence - Recognizing that personal experiences do not automatically confer an understanding of broader cultural nuances.

💬 Story/community-centered design - A shift from traditional design philosophies to ones that prioritize community narratives and connections.

🛠️ Create the space - The imperative to forge environments that foster creativity, belonging, and expression.

A heartfelt thank you to the organizers, speakers, and all attendees for creating a space so vibrant and enriching. This conference was a powerful reminder of our shared journey and the incredible potential within our community to inspire and enact change. Keep going🖤
