♿ Putting disability inclusion at the centre of policy and development in Nigeria

How can Nigeria ensure that persons with disabilities are fully reflected in policies, institutions and development processes?

@UNESCO brought together government institutions, @ncpwdofficial, Organizations of Persons with Disabilities, civil society, academia and other stakeholders in Abuja on 6 October for a consultation on Disability Policy, Data Gaps and the Institutional Landscape in Nigeria.

Opening the dialogue, UNESCO Representative to Nigeria, Dr. @isaiasdarosa, stressed that disability inclusion is not only a human rights and social issue, but also a development imperative.

“When people are missing from data, they risk becoming invisible in policy.”

Chief of Section, MOST, UNESCO Headquarters, Khodeli Irakli, underscored the importance of deliberately embedding inclusion in policymaking:

“If you do not deliberately look for the indicators in the policies that would promote social inclusion, then you will most certainly be excluding a lot of people from that policy.”

The consultation is examining policy gaps, data systems and institutional coordination to develop practical, evidence-informed recommendations for stronger disability inclusion in Nigeria.

As the dialogue reinforced: Data is visibility. Participation is legitimacy. Inclusion is everyone’s responsibility.

Stronger teachers. Safer classrooms. More inclusive education. 🇳🇬🇺🇳🇪🇺

The Government of #Nigeria, @UNESCO and the Government of #Japan are strengthening teacher capacity through a three-day Master Trainers Workshop on safe learning environments, gender-responsive pedagogy and ICT skills.

👩🏽‍🏫 45 master trainers from 15 Colleges of Education are being equipped to cascade the training to other teacher educators—extending its reach across Nigeria.

UNESCO Representative to Nigeria, Dr. @isaiasdarosa, highlighted three priorities: gender-responsive pedagogy, safe and supportive learning environments, and digital competence.

Representing the Federal Government, Dr. Uchenna Uba, Director, Colleges of Education, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to equipping teachers to create safe and inclusive learning environments.

The Embassy of Japan also reaffirmed its commitment to education development in Nigeria, emphasising the vital role of teachers in advancing girls’ education and making technology meaningful in the classroom.

Equipment alone does not transform education; people, practice and institutions do.

What should education look like in the age of Artificial Intelligence? 🤖📚🇳🇬

@unesco joined educators, innovators, policymakers, development partners and young people yesterday in Abuja for the Experience AI Programme Launch & Future of Education in Nigeria Summit.

In his goodwill message, UNESCO Representative to Nigeria Dr. @isaiasdarosa emphasized a key principle:

#AI must serve people — and education must remain human-centred, ethical and inclusive.

As #AI increasingly transforms how we learn, work and create, learners need more than the ability to use new technologies. They need the skills to understand AI, question its outputs, recognize its limitations and biases, protect their privacy, and use it critically and responsibly.

Drawing on #UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence and AI competency frameworks for students and teachers, UNESCO also stressed that the AI revolution must not become another digital divide.

Every learner — including those in underserved communities — must have the opportunity to participate in and benefit from the AI transformation.

🌍 Technology is a means, not an end.
🎓 Teachers must be empowered, not replaced.
💡 Young Nigerians should be creators and innovators, not only consumers of technology.
🤝 No learner should be left behind.

From policy commitments to measurable action. 🇳🇬📚

@unesco and the @nig.education convened a workshop in Abuja on the National Teacher Policy (#NTP) Implementation #Monitoring Tool and User Guide, bringing together senior Ministry officials to strengthen its practical application.

#UNESCO Representative to Nigeria, Dr. @isaiasdarosa, emphasized:

“A policy achieves its purpose not simply when it is adopted, but when its commitments become visible in institutions, in schools and, ultimately, in the daily experience of teachers and learners.”

The Director, Colleges of Education Department, Dr. Uchenna Cecilia Uba, highlighted the importance of the engagement:

“I am confident that this engagement will promote a shared understanding of the monitoring framework and enable constructive dialogue on how best to utilize the tool to track progress, identify gaps, and generate evidence for effective operationalization of the National Teacher Policy.”

Supported under the 🇪🇺 #EU-funded EISS initiative, the Tool will help strengthen evidence-based monitoring, accountability, and action for teachers and learners.
