2819 ACCESS: The Powerful Hour of Prayer! 🙌🏾🙏🏾

What a POWERFUL and unforgettable experience! To be in a stadium filled with thousands of people from all walks of life, coming together for ONE purpose: TO SEEK THE FACE OF GOD! 🙌🏾
We brought EVERYTHING to the altar! Our families, children, marriages, communities, jobs, finances, our nation, the world, and so much more! We stood in the gap, not only for ourselves but for others!

The prayer was POWERFUL, the worship was incredible, and the Holy Spirit filled the atmosphere! Different backgrounds, different struggles, but ONE GOD! What a blessing to witness so many hearts united in faith!

Back at The Phoenix Academy this week! 🐦‍🔥

Today’s session was small, but the conversation was BIG. Our topic was “The Inner Me” which sounds a lot like “the enemy.”

I had my students look at themselves through my phone in selfie mode and asked, “What do you see?” Their responses opened up a conversation about the things they would change about themselves and how much society influences the way we view our own image.

Then we went deeper: Can the “inner me” become our enemy? We talked about how the way we see ourselves can affect our relationships, communication and everyday choices. One student even opened up about struggling with self-sabotage and becoming avoidant with others.

We ended by discussing ways to work through low self-esteem, with affirmations and confiding in friends being their top choices.

Since our last session, these students have been on my mind, so I decided to show them a little love with a few gifts today. We were missing one, but I’m grateful for the two I was able to connect with. 🫶🏾

As always, it’s a blessing to teach and learn from these brilliant minds. We all left with a little more than we came in with. Until next time Phoenix Academy!✌🏾

"Sorry"

This poem I wrote is about the dangerous progression of domestic violence and the excuses we sometimes make while trying to survive it.

With every “at least…”, we minimize what happens to us.

I wrote this piece from two perspectives the Mama and the Child because domestic violence doesn’t only affect the person being abused. Children hear it, see it, feel it, carry it and often times repeat it later on in life.

The first half shows how abuse can escalate little by little while someone continues convincing themselves that this time wasn’t that bad.

The second half shows what “not that bad” can look like through the eyes of a child hiding in a closet.

An apology does not erase abuse, and “at least” should never become the standard for survival.

If you or someone you love recognizes themselves in these words, please know that violence does not have to become worse before it is serious enough to seek help.

Grateful to God to be back at The Phoenix Academy! 🐦‍🔥

This semester started a little differently for me! I unfortunately missed the Community Partner & Volunteer Orientation on Friday, but I’m so thankful that Dr. Deborah Mabry was kind enough to still make the moment special by giving me my very own personal pinning ceremony in her office! It was such a thoughtful gesture and a beautiful way to begin another semester of serving our students.

And today, I was officially BACK with my students! 🙌🏾 We started with a warm-up called “Inspire?” I asked them to look around the room, choose a word that inspired them, and tell me why.

Their answers included: Success, it looks different for everyone. Integrity, face your fears, achieve, and don’t expect anything back for doing the right thing. Consequences, cause and effect. Clock, take time or lose time. Kindness, even if it’s not returned, still give it. Hustle, always work hard and try your best.

Then we moved into our topic: “What’s the Title to Your Life?” They chose: "OMG!” “IDK?!” and “50/50.” Once we started digging into the why behind those titles, the conversation got REAL...life being random, going with the flow, feeling lost or indecisive, making bad decisions, and sometimes acting fast but thinking slow.

We even discussed whether labels are important, and one answer stood out: “No, it doesn’t define you.” 🙌🏾

THIS is why I’m so grateful to be back at The Phoenix Academy. These young people remind me that sometimes you just have to give them the space to talk and LISTEN. As always, we left with more than we came in with! Until next time, Phoenix!
