🌍 UOJ LENS: PREDICTIVE POLICING IS RACIST—TIME TO BAN SURVEILLANCE-DRIVEN INJUSTICE

A new Amnesty International report has condemned the UK’s use of predictive policing technology, describing it as racist and calling for an outright ban. The system, which claims to forecast where crimes will occur or identify ‘high-risk’ individuals, relies on biased data drawn from over-policing of Black and marginalised communities. This entrenches existing inequalities, reinforcing racial profiling under the guise of “innovation.”

Predictive policing doesn’t predict crime—it reproduces racism. By treating communities of colour as threats, this technology escalates surveillance, harassment, and criminalisation. It shifts focus away from addressing systemic causes of inequality and undermines public trust in law enforcement.

Technology cannot solve injustice when it is built on discriminatory systems. We must resist these surveillance tools and demand community-led approaches to safety rooted in justice, equity, and human rights.

UOJ LENS: 🌍 African Leaders Renew Calls for Slavery Reparations – A Long Overdue Reckoning?

This wekeend at the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, leaders plan to shape a "unified vision" of what reparations may look like, from financial compensation and formal acknowledgement of past wrongs to policy reforms.

The call for reparations is not just about money—it’s about justice, accountability, and redressing centuries of racial exploitation. The West profited from slavery, and its wealth was built on the suffering of millions. True justice demands that we confront this history, listen to the voices of those most impacted, and work toward structural repair.

🚨 Key Questions for the Movement:

◘ How can reparations address both economic and social injustice today?

◘ What role do grassroots organizers and frontline communities play in shaping this conversation?

◘ How do we push back against narratives that dismiss reparations as 'impossible' or 'unnecessary'?

✊🏾 Reparations are not charity—they are a debt.

🇮🇪 WHAT’S RACE GOT TO DO WITH IT? CLIMATE INJUSTICE UNCOVERED IN IRELAND 🌍

Just under 50% of respondents in Ireland disagree that their government keeps them well-informed about its plans and policies for tackling climate change. Our report, What’s Race Got to Do with It?, highlights how this lack of transparency disproportionately affects marginalized communities, further excluding them from decision-making on climate action.

True climate justice means ensuring that all communities—especially those most impacted—have access to clear information, representation, and a voice in shaping solutions. Together, we can build an Ireland where climate action is equitable, transparent, and inclusive. ✊🏾🌱

UOJ Lens: Normalising Islamophobia in European Media

In a shocking display of media bias, Euractiv's Editor-in-Chief, Matthew Karnitschnig, recently claimed:

"There's no question that much of this ignorance resides in Muslim migrant communities, where hatred of Jews is as much a staple of daily life as baklava."

This racist remark is a stark example of how anti-Muslim prejudice is legitimised in European media. By portraying antisemitism as inherent to Muslim migrant communities, Karnitschnig erases the diversity of these communities, scapegoats them for a broader societal problem, and fuels dangerous stereotypes that justify exclusion and state violence.

The reference to food—“as much a staple of daily life as baklava”—is not incidental. It reduces Muslims to an exoticised ‘other’ and reinforces old colonial tropes of dehumanisation. Such language echoes the historic marginalisation of minority communities, now repackaged for contemporary discourse.

Euractiv and Karnitschnig must be held accountable. A retraction is not enough—there must be serious reflection on how European media normalises Islamophobia. In an era of rising hate crimes and far-right rhetoric, words have consequences. It’s time to challenge and dismantle the structures that make such racism acceptable.

Is this acceptable from a leading media commentator?
