What makes UYLC different?

The difference isn’t always something you can measure.

It’s in the hugs.
The smiles.
The way our students and staff look out for each other and care for each other.

At UYLC, connection comes first…
and everything else grows from there.

Our UYLC students enjoyed another week of exciting experiences, creative activities, and meaningful learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom! We explored our community with visits to Caddo Park, Natural Grocers, Buckhorn Park, Half Price Books, Evans Park, Five Below, Z.Tao Marketplace, and At Home.

Back at UYLC, we embraced the fall season with scarecrow building, colorful coffee filter leaves, Halloween snow globes, marshmallow ghost towers, fizzing pumpkins, and more! Students also explored hands-on science with Mega Bouncy Balls and practiced kitchen skills while making their own rice cake creations for Foodie Friday. Our daily classroom jobs, guinea pig care, learning journals, and cleaning routines continued to provide valuable opportunities to develop responsibility and independence.

We also enjoyed Yoga with Ms. Heather, physical fitness activities, and our weekly Sound Bath.

A special thank you to our wonderful peer helpers, Ethan and Haven! We loved having you join us this week and appreciate the kindness, friendship, and enthusiasm you brought to our students.

It was another rewarding week of exploring, creating, strengthening friendships, and putting everyday life skills into practice. We are so proud of our students and the progress they continue to make at UYLC! by @uniquelyyoulearningcenter

Today our September field trip took us to Arbor Hills Nature Preserve in Plano! It was the coolest morning we have had in months, a cool 94 degrees, which actually felt pretty nice in the shade and breeze after months of 100+ degree temperatures. We clocked over a mile of walking while exploring the nature trails and our surroundings and spent time at the awesome playground. We were also so happy to have our peer helper Ethan join us for the field trip! Our students did amazingly well, and we were so glad to spend the morning learning, exploring, and enjoying some time outdoors. 🌳 by @uniquelyyoulearningcenter

We are so close to completing our UYLC kitchen!

Since moving into our new space, we have added a kitchen prep sink with a dedicated water line and installed a dishwasher, creating even more opportunities for our students to practice cooking, cleaning, food preparation, and other important life skills.

Our oven is ready to go! The final step is configuring our breaker box and installing the correct electrical outlet. We are hoping to raise $800 by October 1 to make it happen!

If you would like to help us finish our kitchen, donations can be made through Zelle or Venmo using the QR codes above, or directly at:

Zelle: uniquelyyoulearningcenter@gmail.com
Venmo: @UYLC2024

Please type “Kitchen” in the memo line.

Every contribution, big or small, gets us closer to turning on that oven and creating even more hands-on learning opportunities for our students.

Thank you for continuing to support our students and UYLC! 💙 by @uniquelyyoulearningcenter

This week, we were out and about in our community, and our students enjoyed so many meaningful experiences!

Our week took us to Horizon Market, Liberty Recreation Center, Liberty Park, Dollar Tree, the Environmental Education Center, Evans Park, The Mailroom, Hobby Lobby, CuppaPug, and Dallas North Aquarium! Students mailed their own postcards at The Mailroom, explored nature and made observations about the world around them at the Environmental Education Center, interacted with a room full of spunky pugs and fed them carrots at CuppaPug, and explored aquatic life at Dallas North Aquarium, where the Nemo and Dory fish were definite favorites! Each outing gave students opportunities to practice communication, following directions, navigating community spaces, making choices, staying with the group, and building independence.

Back at UYLC, learning continued with hands on PBL and STEM activities, Learning Journals, cleaning rotations, and plenty of opportunities to practice functional academics and life skills.

We also enjoyed Yoga with Ms. Heather and a calming Sound Bath. Thursday was extra special as we attended our very first Shining Stars dance session at Chamberlain Dance! Our students loved moving and grooving together, and we are so excited to make this part of our Thursdays!

For Foodie Friday, students made gluten free snickerdoodle cookies! While the cookies were baking, they practiced caring for Minnie and Winnie by preparing their peppers, lettuce, cilantro, and strawberries for the weekend.

It was a week full of community experiences, new discoveries, movement, connection, hands on learning, and building skills for everyday life at UYLC! by @uniquelyyoulearningcenter

Today was our very first dance class as part of Chamberlain Dance’s Shining Stars program, and we couldn’t wait until tomorrow’s weekly recap to share! 🎶

Our UYLC students had such a wonderful time! Through music and movement, students practiced coordination, following directions, body awareness, imitation, and self-expression. Most importantly, we loved seeing everyone participate, move, smile, and have fun together!

A huge thank you to Ms. Kathy, Ms. Missy, and Ms. Tonya for this incredible opportunity for our students. We are so grateful and can’t wait to come back next week! 💙

This week was all about putting skills into action, trying new things, and making meaningful connections both inside UYLC and out in our community!

Students practiced food preparation, cutting fruits and vegetables, community signs, money skills, cleaning routines, sequencing, problem solving, and independence throughout the week. PBL and STEM kept us busy with the Bear Bridge Balance Challenge, UNO Card Towers, Foil Painting, Magnatile Town Building, Cardboard Hole Punch Creations, Floating Spoon Art, Bubble Wand Science, and Sponge Capsules.

We also enjoyed Yoga with Ms. Heather @goodyogatx , an obstacle course, and a calming Sound Bath.

For Foodie Friday, students made banana peanut butter smoothies while practicing measuring, sequencing, food preparation, making choices, and cleanup.

The highlight of our week was an extra special community outing with middle and high school students from Dallas Learning Center. Students played basketball and dodgeball together as we kicked off our new monthly Big/Little Brother and Sister partnership. The smiles were contagious, and our hearts were so happy to see the engagement, connection, and encouragement among the students!

We had another fantastic week filled with hands-on learning, functional academics, creativity, movement, and opportunities to learn out in our community!

We were so excited to welcome our new friend, Mateo, to UYLC this week! We loved having him join our UYLC crew and look forward to all of the fun and learning ahead.

Throughout the week, students practiced functional literacy and math through food preparation, pricing, matching, categorizing, sequencing, cleaning, and everyday routines. PBL and STEM kept us busy with Magnatile Ice Hockey, Hammer Paint Splatter Art, Aluminum Foil Boats, Zingo, Soap Science, DIY Air Squishies, Rainbow Sugar Cube Towers, Packing Peanut Building, and Pipe Cleaner Flower Bouquets.

We also enjoyed Yoga with Ms. Heather, where students practiced movement, balance, body awareness, and calming strategies. @goodyogatx

It was a great week for learning out in our community, too! We visited Liberty Recreation Center for open gym, made a few trips to Evans Park, and finished the week with a visit to DFW Reptarium. Students saw turtles, snakes, guinea pigs, macaws, and even met an animal many of us had never seen before, a Patagonian mara, a unique relative of the guinea pig!

For Foodie Friday, students made Pop and Mix Snack Bags while practicing food preparation, counting, portioning, sequencing, and making choices. The popcorn even turned into a fun sensory experience as students enjoyed crushing and exploring it with their hands!

It was another wonderful week of learning through real experiences, building independence, and developing skills our students can use in everyday life at UYLC! by @uniquelyyoulearningcenter
