Human Rights Day honours the sacrifices of Sharpeville and Langa, a reminder of the cost of dignity, freedom, and the right to live fully in our own country

Today, we reflect not only on where we come from, but on the responsibility to protect and uphold these rights in the present

This morning, GOOD Councillor Matthew Cook joined us at the Sharpeville Memorial Site to honour the lives lost on 21 March 1960, when peaceful protestors stood against unjust pass laws.

On this Human Rights Day, we recommit ourselves to that struggle. Let us work together to ensure that the rights of every South African are protected, and that dignity, equality, and justice are restored for all.

Residents of of ward 101, Olivedale in the city of Johannesburg are frustrated. Potholes, failing infrastructure, and slow responses from the City are everyday reminders that maintenance is slipping and voices aren’t being heard.

The message from the community is clear: we deserve better.

Unite is listening, organising, and building local leadership that puts residents first.

Local government reform will fail without leadership.

Tebogo Moalusi, representing UNITE for Change, outlines five priorities for real change:

- Political will.
- Professionalised leadership.
- Clean, digitised procurement.
- Active citizen participation.
- People-centred governance.

Instruments alone won’t fix municipalities, leaders will.
