POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
When Levi first became interested in using glass for his @unlart senior capstone project, he knew there would be a few hurdles he’d need to clear in order to bring his vision to life.

Earning both a Research and Creative Activity Grant and an Elgas Project Grant helped @theartoflevi jumpstart the process of pursuing the work that inspires him.

“When I started thinking about my capstone, I knew early on that I wanted to do something with glass work. I also knew it would be a pretty complicated endeavor since the process requires special equipment. With these grants, I’m able to get my hands on the glass and tools I need — things that can typically get pretty expensive.”

Awarded through @unlarts, Levi is one of many Husker artists whose work has been supported by these and other grants available through the college. The awards have also helped Levi make a personal connection from his past into his work.

“A big draw for me to explore working with glass is my grandma. She was really into antique glass that came in all these interesting forms and colors — she even made a glass bottle tree for me when I was really little. Getting the opportunity to explore that connection in my capstone is really meaningful.”

Throughout the application process, Levi found lots of support and helpful feedback from his program.

“Our professors are very vocal about encouraging us to take advantage of these grant opportunities and helping us keep track of deadlines. My sculpture professor and a graduate student both gave me amazing critiques on my application that really helped me improve it before sending it in.”

Grant applications are a big part of being a working artist, and Levi says that gaining this experience is just one more aspect of the program that’s helped him mature in his practice.

"Everyone in the school — from the professors to the grad students — has been very supportive and are so good at pointing you in the right direction. I'd say I’ve grown into a completely different artist today than I was when I came in here.”

Part of being a human being is having a unique sense of creativity. Creativity is like a muscle—the more you use it, the better it gets. Professors like Sandra Williams encourage students to flex this muscle through work such as mural design. Art in itself fosters ownership and a sense of belonging in your city, finding connection and collaborating with those around you.

A collective, yet diverse group of students who “share a curiosity about interrogating and articulating interests” – that is the beauty of Art History. Within and throughout the city of Lincoln, students are learning that art cannot be contained and that there is beauty sewn into our community. #UNLarts @unlart by @unlart

Student Spotlight: Istar Quintero
B.A. Studio Art (photography)
Hometown: Originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, but Lincoln, Nebraska, since 2013.

Describe yourself with six words.
Determined, independent, resourceful, assertive, productive and attentive.

What’s something you’ve done at Nebraska that will impact your future career?
Thanks to the Hixson-Lied Study Activity Grant, I attended a workshop led by one of my biggest inspirations, Colette Fu, at the Women’s Studio Workshop. In the week-long workshop, I learned the fundamental elements of pop-up bookmaking alongside five other artists from diverse backgrounds and ages. The program evolved from basic techniques to more complex mechanisms. This experience significantly impacted my future career by deepening my understanding of conceptualizing my three-dimensional work. It also gave me a lot of professional techniques that I have now incorporated into my craft.

Why are the arts important?
Arts are important because they foster critical thinking, curiosity and problem solving. While that may sound cliché, it is something I experience firsthand through my work and the materials I choose to use.

Tell us about something you have coming up that you’re excited about and why.
I’m really excited about my project for the upcoming capstone exhibition as I prepare to graduate this December. I’ve been work on this project for the past year and a half, and watching it come to life has been rewarding.

What do you like best about the Hixson-Lied College?
What I like best is the wide range resources available, such as student galleries to show your work and Adobe software. But also, the freedom to shape your own path as an artist. If you stay persistent, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to grow.

Would you like to give any shout-outs?
I’d like to give a huge shout-out to my partner in crime and biggest supported, Devin Tate, as well as my friends and family who have always had my back. I’m also grateful to my mentor who has been there throughout my four-year academic journey, offering guidance, Dana Fritz.
