UNMASKED: Life Is a Fight
From a broken childhood to purpose and resilience
This is not a sports book — it’s a survival story

POSTS STORIES REELS

I WAS JUST A CHILD… AND THE MONSTER WAS REAL. 💔

I DIDN’T GET TO CHOOSE MY CHILDHOOD. I HAD TO SURVIVE IT.

Before the titles. Before the success. Before anyone knew my name… there was a frightened little boy fighting battles no child should ever have to face.

A boy carrying pain, fear and scars nobody could see.

I LEARNED HOW TO FIGHT LONG BEFORE I EVER STEPPED INTO A RING. 🥊

For years, I wore a mask. Hiding the pain behind strength, success and a smile. People saw the fighter, the champion, the businessman… but they never knew the battles that built him.

Until now.

📖 UNMASKED – LIFE IS A FIGHT

This isn’t just a book. It’s the story I’ve carried inside me for a lifetime.

From childhood adversity to becoming a world champion, building businesses and refusing to let my past destroy my future.

I’ve finally taken off the mask and told the story I never thought I’d have the courage to share.

BECAUSE THE HARDEST FIGHT OF MY LIFE WASN’T IN A RING… IT WAS SURVIVING WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE I EVER PUT ON A PAIR OF GLOVES.

If you’ve ever felt broken, alone, forgotten or like life has knocked you down one too many times, this book is for you.

Your past may shape you, but it doesn’t have to define you. ❤️

Never give up. Always believe in the power of your dreams. 👊 by @unmaskedbook

SOME OF LIFE’S DEEPEST WOUNDS NEVER BLEED, AND THE HARDEST BATTLES LEAVE NO VISIBLE SCARS. ❤️

I’ve had broken bones, injuries and physical pain throughout nearly 40 years of martial arts. But nothing compares to the scars we carry inside.

If you could see the scars I carry on the inside, you wouldn’t recognise me.

We all wear masks. We smile when we’re hurting, pretend we’re fine and hide battles nobody knows we’re fighting.

But here’s what life has taught me…

You cannot heal what you keep pretending doesn’t hurt.

One day, you have to take that mask off. Face it, your fears and your pain.

Healing starts from the inside out. ❤️

People can support you, love you and guide you, but only YOU can do the work to become the best version of yourself.

You can’t change it, but you can change your future.

That’s why I wrote my book.

📖 UNMASKED – LIFE IS A FIGHT

My story. My battles. My scars.

Available on Amazon Prime today.

🥊 Sometimes the biggest fight in life is the one nobody sees.

Are you still hiding behind your mask?

Keep going, no matter how hard life gets or what challenges you face. Never give up on yourself or the things you want to achieve in life.

Always believe in the power of your dreams. ❤️🙏

Life is a fight, and sometimes the hardest battles are the ones nobody else can see.

My book, UNMASKED: Life Is a Fight, tells my story, the battles I’ve faced, the lessons I’ve learned and why I never gave up.

If my story can inspire just one person to keep going when they feel like giving up, then sharing it has been worth it.

📖 UNMASKED: Life Is a Fight is available on Amazon Prime with next-day delivery and can also be ordered through Waterstones.

Never stop believing. ❤️ by @unmaskedbook

Sometimes I think about my younger self and what I would say to him…

If I could tell that little lad one thing…

You’re going to have to be stronger than you could ever imagine.

As a kid, I learned very early that monsters are real… mine was.

The pain, especially the mental pain, is going to test you in ways you won’t believe. There’ll be times you’ll wonder how much more you can take.

But trust me, mate… you’re stronger than you know.

I always promised myself that when I grew up, I’d become the man I needed most when I was a kid.

And I did. ❤️

I truly believe God tests his best soldiers with the hardest battles.

So keep going, little man. Keep fighting, keep believing and never quit. 🥊

THE ROCK AND THE RIVER 🪨🌊

“The stronger the mind, the stronger the body. The stronger the body, the stronger the spirit.”

I remember watching Kickboxer 2 and hearing David Sloane explain that the most dangerous weapon in the universe is a focused mind.

Your mind should be like a still, calm pool—peaceful, relaxed and completely focused. But anger, fear or any powerful emotion can be like throwing a rock into that water. Suddenly, everything becomes chaos and your concentration is lost. This has stuck with me my whole life.

I believe the mind controls everything, but learning to control your own mind is one of the hardest battles you will ever face.

Control your mind, control your emotions, and your body will follow. A strong body can make you a fighter—but a strong mind can make you a champion. 🥊

NEVER QUIT 🥊

I’ve failed so many times in my life, but without failing, there is no winning.

Failure isn’t the end—it’s a lesson. I’ve learned from every setback, grown through every struggle and used it all to keep pushing forward.

We only get one life, and one day it will all be over. So make the most of it while you’re here. Don’t play it safe. Try for more, chase your dreams and become everything you know you can be.

It’s your life—make it count.

On this podcast, I opened up about my past trauma, my mindset and how I had to find myself again.

What I went through as a young teenager affected me more than people probably ever realised. As I became a man, I had to rebuild myself physically, mentally and emotionally, from the inside out.

My brain used to feel like a pressure cooker, but I learned how to control my mind instead of letting it control me. Mindset is everything.

I never had professional help or support. I hid a lot of what I was feeling behind a mask every day — which is one of the reasons my book is called UNMASKED – Life Is a Fight.

Talking about this makes me vulnerable, but other people’s stories have helped me. If sharing mine helps even one person find themselves again, believe in themselves and use their darkest times as fuel, then it’s worth it.

Crazy how one person on the cover of a martial arts magazine helped change the path of my life. ❤️🥊

That person was Jean-Claude Van Damme — JCVD @jcvd

I was just a kid going through some of the worst years of my life. I was being physically beaten up nearly every day by my mam’s boyfriend. I remember being thrown into a toilet, smashing my head and cutting it wide open. Years of it broke me down physically, mentally and emotionally.

Seeing JCVD on that magazine gave me something positive to look towards. I didn’t know it then, but martial arts would completely change my path.

I left school with no qualifications. Before I ever became successful at anything, I failed more times than I can remember — but I never quit.

I started my first business with £20. Businesses failed and I lost my gym 4 times. The 4 time, after it flooded twice, I lost pretty everything and was out of business for 6 months.

So I had to relocate and build everything from scratch the full business.

I know what it’s like to have nothing, to fail and to feel broken.

But I always kept going.

Martial arts took me on an incredible journey. I became a kickboxing champion and coach, won medals at European and World Championships and received awards including a Martial Arts Hall of Fame Legend Award. I rebuilt my gym, became an author of Unmasked: Life Is a Fight, and invented a game an now I’m getting opportunities in martial arts action movies. 🎬🥊

I’m definitely not JCVD level yet🤣 — I’m only getting started.

This video of me speaking is from Platform, a business event where I was invited to speak and share my story.

I’m not sharing this to brag. I’m sharing it for anyone going through their own hell right now.

Where you start doesn’t have to be where you finish.

I’ve failed more times than I’ve succeeded. I just never stopped getting back up.

Sometimes one person or one moment of inspiration can change your path.

For me, it was JCVD on that magazine cover. ❤️

Keep believing. Never give up. Keep chasing your dreams.

Great to be signing copies of my book Unmasked – Life Is a Fight at the Martial Arts Show.

My book tells my story of growing up on a council estate, facing adversity and trauma, finding martial arts and developing the fighter’s mindset that helped shape my life.

Writing a book is hard. Writing about the hardest parts of your life is even harder. But if my story can inspire someone to keep fighting, believe in themselves and achieve more, then it was worth putting pen to paper. 🙏

Be the best version of yourself and always believe in the power of your dreams.

Just a reminder… never take life for granted. It can change in the blink of an eye.

I’ve always known life isn’t about quantity.

I’ve always known it’s about quality.

But until life tests you in a way you never thought possible, you don’t truly understand what that means.

When someone you love is fighting the biggest battle of their life, everything else becomes irrelevant.

Money means nothing.
Success means nothing.
Popularity means nothing.

You suddenly realise what really matters.

Some days, everything we’ve been through just pops into my head.

Not because I want to go back there… but because it reminds me how lucky I really am.

People always talk about how many friends they’ve got or how many people they’ve got around them. I’ve learned that when life really tests you, numbers don’t matter.

I never expected anyone to fight my battles for me. I was always going to do that myself.

But having one person who believes in you, stands beside you through every storm, and gives you a reason to keep going… that’s a blessing.

Looking back now, I don’t think about the people who weren’t there.

I think about the one who never left.

Life isn’t about quantity.

It’s about quality.

If you’ve got that one person in your life, hold on to them. Tell them you love them. Never take them for granted.

Because life can change in the blink of an eye.

Always believe in the power of your dreams.

Some stories can’t be written… they unfold.

This year marks 20 years since I opened my very first martial arts gym.

Back in 2006, that gym was called Brawler. Later that year, Brawler transformed into Contender Gym. Looking back now, I realise that was the start of a journey that changed my life.

Fast forward 20 years…

I’m now featured as a fighter in my first martial arts action movie…

And it’s called BRAWLER.

When I stopped and thought about it, it honestly gave me goosebumps. It felt like all the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle had finally come together.

As a kid, I was obsessed with martial arts movies. I’d watch them over and over, recreate the fight scenes and dream that one day I’d be part of one.

Now that dream has become reality.

I’m proud to feature as a fighter in BRAWLER, the upcoming action thriller directed by and starring Scott Adkins in his feature directorial debut. It’s an honour to be part of such an incredible project.

Ironically, for Contender Gym’s 20th anniversary, I’d been thinking about making a documentary called Brawler: The Rise of Contender. Looking back now, it’s amazing how the name Brawler has followed me throughout my life.

I truly believe everything happens for a reason.

This is only the beginning. I’ve got more action movie projects in the pipeline, so… watch this space.

Contender Gym will always be my home. Thank you to our amazing coaches, staff and members who have been part of this incredible 20-year journey.

A massive thank you to Scott Adkins, the entire production team, stunt team, camera crew, make-up artists, wardrobe, runners, and everyone behind the scenes. Special thanks to Caged Steel for hosting such a professional event. My first movie experience is one I’ll never forget.

The poster isn’t the official movie poster. It’s a fan-made poster I had created because I’m genuinely excited to help promote this amazing film. 🎬🍿

Always believe in the power of your dreams.
