Last night, Christopher Barile, professor of chemistry, reminded us that if we want a more sustainable future, renewable energy has to be a part of the solution. His talk, as part of the Tahoe Series, explored how solutions from CO₂ recycling to smart windows are just some of the ways we can help build more sustainable technologies.

To learn more about energy solutions, chat with Dr. Barile at the Energy Solutions Forum hosted on UNR main campus or at the Tahoe Discovery Lab.

She imagined the future before computers even existed. 💻✨

Long before modern computers, Ada Lovelace saw their potential to do more than crunch numbers, she imagined machines capable of creating, discovering, and solving complex problems.

This Ada Lovelace Day, we celebrate her groundbreaking legacy and the women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics who continue to push boundaries, spark discovery, and shape what’s next. 🔬🧬⚙️💡

What does it take to decarbonize the materials that build our world?

Last Wednesday, we welcomed Dr. Sabbie Miller for an Energy Solutions Forum focused on an important challenge: decarbonizing industrial materials manufacturing.

As a professor at UC Davis, Faculty Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Director of the Materials Decarbonization and Sustainability Center, Dr. Miller brings an interdisciplinary perspective to the future of sustainable materials and resilient supply chains.

In this video, Dr. Miller highlights the ideas behind her talk, from understanding where greenhouse gas emissions come from in materials manufacturing to exploring strategies that can make these industries more sustainable. 🌱

Thank you, Dr. Miller, for joining us and sharing your expertise with our community! 👏

Dr. Christopher Barile, the Clemons-Magee Endowed Professor in Chemistry at the University of Nevada, Reno, takes us inside the Barile Laboratory for the next talk in the Tahoe Series. His group uses chemistry and electricity to tackle everyday energy problems.

He will cover two lines of research. The first is turning carbon dioxide into useful fuels and chemicals by designing materials that control how those reactions unfold. The second is a new generation of smart windows that switch between clear and dark with electricity, cutting glare while buildings use less energy for heating, cooling and lighting.

“From CO2 to Smart Windows: Chemistry for a Better Energy Future”

📅 Thursday, Oct. 15
🕠 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
📍 Prim Library
💻 Or join on Zoom

The talk is free. Register or get the Zoom link through the link in our bio. by @unrscience

🌎 World Habitat Day!

From Nevada’s high desert and alpine forests to its rivers, wetlands, and mountain ecosystems, our students and researchers take science beyond the classroom and into the field.

Across these diverse landscapes, they study the ecosystems that support biodiversity, provide clean air and water, and help communities thrive. Their work deepens our understanding of the natural world and helps inform how we protect it for generations to come.

This #WorldHabitatDay, we celebrate the students, scientists, and researchers exploring Nevada’s remarkable habitats and using science to help build a healthier, more resilient future for people and the planet.
