THE LAST LIGHT
Late summer. Cooler nights. Books worth staying up for.
Summer is still here, but something has shifted.

The sun is going down earlier. The windows are still open, but not for quite as long. We are entering the part of the year when a book on the nightstand starts to look better than almost anything else.

So we made a reading season out of it!!! Because hello! Reading is for the low lights and the sunshine and the beaches and the late-night star parties.

THE LAST LIGHT brings together six Unsolicited Press books: three from 2026 and three award-winning books from our backlist. Poetry, memoir, stories, family wreckage, strange encounters, grief, survival, humor, and more than one reason to stay up past your bedtime.

THE NEW LIGHT:
Matter’s Edge by Jerrod E. Bohn
My Monstrous Family Cookbook by Jason Daniels
Stepdad on the Dance Floor by Timothy Boudreau

THE AFTERGLOW:
You May Feel a Bit of Pressure by Amy Gallo Ryan
Gathering Broken Light by Heather Lang-Cassera
Can I Have a Hug First? by Mary Paula Hunter

Summer is not gone yet. Neither are we.

JOY by Francis Daulerio examines the ways in which we keep ourselves alive, centering around the birth of Daulerio’s first child while coping with the loss of friend and collaborator, Scott Hutchison. With a foreword by acclaimed author Maggie Smith (Good Bones, Keep Moving), and cover art by UK artist Helen Ahpornsiri, this life-affirming collection highlights what Bon Iver’s Sean Carey describes as “Daulerio’s relentless hope and love,” encouraging readers to push through hardships to find their own sense of meaning.

The Truth About Unringing Phones by Lara Lillibridge: essays on silence, grief, and communication. When Lara was four years old, her father moved from Rochester, New York, to Anchorage, Alaska, a distance of over 4,000 miles. She spent her childhood chasing after him, flying a quarter of the way around the world to tug at the hem of his jacket. Now that he is in his eighties, she contemplates her obligation to an absentee father.

The men in ANIMAL HUSBANDRY, Taylor García’s new short story collection, are in the midst of their own personal apocalypses as the real and artificial world decays around them. Struggling to find the future versions of themselves, the husbands, fathers, bachelors, lovers, influencers, and healers in these stories learn to stop fighting and start transforming. As Mario's job is eliminated due to AI, he begins mixing with his polyamorous neighbors, while his wife falls for a chat bot, sending their marriage to the breaking point in the title story, Animal Husbandry.

In Mother Viper, Savannah Cooper writes through grief, belief, loss, and survival with raw emotional clarity. Rooted in the landscapes of Missouri and the liminal spaces of youth, these poems confront suicide, religious departure, and the complicated meanings of home and identity.

The collection closes with devastating and honest poems about pregnancy loss and abortion, holding sorrow and relief in the same breath. Unflinching and deeply human, Mother Viper traces a life reshaped by loss and insists on the possibility of resilience without erasure.

Goodness gracious, 2026 isn't even over yet (yes yes we still have so much PRing and sales-ing and event-ing!!!) and we are so excited to give you a peek into 2027.

Next year, Unsolicited Press turns 15 and it wouldn't be a party if we didnt invite some of our favorite authors to unleash books that are gritty, absurd, surreal, feminist, and downright sad. Next year, our catalog has familiar faces, but we also invited some newbies into the mix. We're releasing a swath of books that were rescued from near disaster too (IYKYK). Needless to say, we've bitten off a lot. But hell, you're only 15 once, right?

And because we don't want to leave anyone out, throughout the year, we will be looking back as much as we are looking forward. We will celebrate the authors who trusted us in the beginning, those who've watched us fall on our faces, and those who have continued to champion the missoin here at the press.

It's going to be a blast. But for today, let's look at what's coming out next year.

Meet the Unsolicited Press class of 2027.

From post–World War I New York to pandemic-era Savannah, from the quiet kitchens of Maine to the heat-soaked streets of Malaysia, THE LEG IN QUESTION unravels the strange, haunting, and often darkly funny ways our flesh betrays us. A young woman insists her healthy leg must be removed. A physician faces ghosts of the living and the dead. A mountain cabin turns feral. A debutante circuit shields a gay man on the cusp of a terrifying new epidemic.

Across sixteen stories, doctors and patients collide in moments where the body’s mysteries—its failures, obsessions, hungers, and grief—expose the fragile seams between sanity and longing. These are tales of medicine and mortality, yes, but also of the tender, reckless, astonishing human spirit trying to make sense of it all. by @unsolicitedp

For the past month, we’ve been looking at where we are: three books from 2026, three award-winning books from the archive, and six reminders that books deserve longer lives than a launch week.

Now we’re turning around. In two days, we announce the 2027 Unsolicited Press list.

Poetry. Fiction. Memoir. Creative nonfiction. Hybrid work. Stories. Novellas. New writers. Returning writers. Mothers, monsters, ghosts, bodies, fire, family, shame, art, survival, and at least a few books that made us say, well, obviously we have to publish that.

And there’s one other thing: 2012 → 2027.

Next year is our fifteenth year!

We have plans. Hope you plan to join us.
