Hello, my name is Anthony Franco! I spent my summer at Commerce House as an Art Director Intern!

I gained hands-on experience helping concept advertisements, build digital assets, brand, identities, and design posters, and other creative touch points. I also became more familiar with Figma and Illustrator, expanding my skills and experience in the design and advertising world.

I was paired with a copywriter, intern, and together we collaborated on a variety of projects across different brands and creative challenges.

Throughout my internship, I had the opportunity to make so many valuable connections with art, directors, copywriters, creative directors, social, media, managers, account, managers, and many other talented people across the agency. by @unt_cvad_gd

For Design Month we’re sharing a few of our graphic design students’ internship experiences! Today we hear from Erin Callihan, class of 2027:

Hello! Over the summer, I had the opportunity to be a Marketing Graphics and Content Intern for commercial interiors company @haworthinc . This internship was such a valuable experience and taught me how to work on a team of real designers. Here are some snippets of my time there this summer! The Nobel prize in literature was awarded to poet and essayist Anne Carson. If you want to see what the fuss is about, students can read/experience her book “Nox” in our Gough Design Research Space.

Nox is stunning as both literary and design artifact. This accordion-folded book reads as an almost sacred box of memories and histories, and serves as a loving elegy after the death of Carson’s brother.

Find it in our “Book Arts” section. Designed in collaboration with Robert Currie. Published by New Directions, 2010. by @unt_cvad_gd

When it comes to our alumni, the inspiration really stacks up!

Hybrid Design sent over a HUGE collection of design ephemera from their archives for our students to dig through, study, and put to use in their publication design courses. More of these beautiful and thoughtful samples can be viewed in our Gough Design Research Space.

We’re especially proud to say that Hybrid’s founders are program alumni.

Thank you @hybriddesignsf for giving our students something worth getting their hands on. by @unt_cvad_gd

Now for a little holiday magic in August! Congratulations to Zoey Long (class of 2025) for receiving a Gold in the Graphis New Talent Awards 2026. This magical project, produced in class with Professor Stephen Zhang, won gold in promotional design. Zoey developed the Realms of Wonder campaign to reinforce Neiman Marcus‘s commitment to extraordinary experiences. Inspired by the nostalgic fantasy the Nutcracker, the campaign blends playful, storybook-style illustration with refined, embellished typography to evoke charm and sophistication. Materials include a richly illustrated edition of the annual holiday book, ornamental gift wrapping, and an interactive advent calendar. On the left is a colorful illustration of a Nutcracker that uses bold shapes and thin golden line work. On the right is a mock up of the interior of a book spread. The book also includes illustrations in the same style, paired with elegant gold typography. by @unt_cvad_gd

Provocative. Gothic. Romantic. Subversive. Xavier Rafique (class of '27) earned a second Gold in the Graphis New Talent Awards 2026 for his Alexander McQueen book layout. The project, rooted in extensive research and image curation, lends a nuanced look at the famed fashion designer’s 12 most iconic collections. A clash of monospace typography for body copy and contemporary serif typefaces for headers alludes to the fashion designer’s famous use of juxtaposition within his own work. The book is just over 100 pages, and was designed under the guidance of Professor Whitney Rush.

Today we’re highlighting the first of TWO projects by Xavier Rafique (class of '27) that earned Gold Graphis New Talent Awards.

These three magazine spreads, created in Typography Two with Professor Erica Holeman, showcase the work of famed street photographer Willy Spiller. Through pull quotes, customized typography, drop caps, and other iconography, Xavier’s work echoes the dynamism of the 1980s New York subway system captured in Spiller’s photography. Opening spread of a magazine feature story opener. Bold typography frames a photo of folks in a subway car. Smaller text to the right offsets the main graphic. by @unt_cvad_gd
