This morning we gathered as a department to discuss the incredible work our teams have done this year.

During our State of the Department Address, the Department Chair, Fiemu Nwariaku, MD, MBA, FACS, and our eight division chiefs reflected on the year's accomplishments and shared their division's goals for the near future.

We also celebrated the launch of our FY26 Annual Report, "Voices of Surgery," available in print, online, and through 35 podcast episodes that feature the different voices throughout our department. This work does not happen alone, and we want to continue sharing the important collaborations throughout our teams and those we work with.

We're excited to share the people, stories, and innovations that continue to shape our department. Explore the full report at the link in our bio!

For people facing breast cancer, having options can make a meaningful difference. Dr. Alvin Kwok, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, wants patients and their loved ones to know they do not have to face those questions alone.

Today, people with breast cancer have more treatment and reconstruction options than ever before. While reconstruction looks different for every person, it can help restore confidence, quality of life, and a sense of normalcy after treatment.

In his Letter of Hope, Dr. Kwok shares a message of reassurance for patients and families: our team is here to listen, help patients understand their options, and provide compassionate care throughout the process.

Read his full letter through the link in our bio. A professional headshot of Alvin C. Kwok, MD, MPH, is set against a blue background. The text reads: "LETTER OF HOPE. As a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, I enjoy seeing how our efforts bring women a greater sense of normalcy, 'wholeness,' and self-confidence." At the bottom, it states Alvin C. When cancer has spread to the abdomen, having more treatment options can make a meaningful difference.

HIPEC and PIPAC are two innovative ways to deliver chemotherapy directly into the abdomen. HIPEC combines surgery with heated chemotherapy, while PIPAC uses a minimally invasive procedure to deliver chemotherapy as a pressurized aerosol. Each is used in different situations, based on a person’s cancer and treatment needs.

We are proud to be one of only a few hospitals in the country to offer both treatments, giving patients and their care teams more options to consider when standard treatments may not be enough.

For Lisa Chapman, PA-C, caring for people with cancer is more than a career. It’s deeply personal.

After losing both her mother and a close friend to cancer, Lisa knows how much fear, heartache, and uncertainty a diagnosis can bring. Today, as a physician assistant in urologic surgical oncology, she draws on those experiences to help patients and families feel supported through some of life’s most private and difficult moments.

During National Advanced Practice Provider Week, we’re celebrating Lisa and all the APPs whose expertise, compassion, and dedication make a difference for patients and families every day.

In her Letter of Hope, Lisa thanks patients for trusting their care teams with their fears, vulnerabilities, and stories—and reminds us that cancer care is built not only on medical expertise, but also on compassion, dignity, and human connection.

What drives Kelly Hewitt, MD, FACS, in her work as a breast cancer surgeon? Her patients.

For Dr. Hewitt, caring for someone with breast cancer begins by sitting down together, talking through the options, and finding the approach that feels right for that individual.

In this episode of Talks with Docs, she shares more about that patient-centered approach, innovations such as robotic mastectomy, and how research is helping improve treatment now and for the future.

By combining compassionate care with leading-edge research and surgical innovation, Dr. Hewitt and her colleagues are helping ensure each patient receives care tailored to their individual needs.

We are thrilled to announce that the new integrated vascular surgery residency was just approved by the ACGME! All of the paperwork is submitted to participate in the Match this year and the program should appear in ERAS in 1-2 weeks! We are excited to watch this program flourish, and even more excited to collaborate with new trainees in vascular surgery. The breadth and depth of exposure seen here in Salt Lake is outstanding, and new trainees will have the opportunity to learn with some truly world-class surgeons and mentors. #uofuvascularsurgery #thematch #residencyapplication #integratedvascularresidency #integratedvascularsurgery by @uofusurgery

Did you know the newer iPhones have built-in Crash & Fall Detection that automatically alerts first responders if you take a hard impact and don’t turn it off?
We had no idea... until a bag containing an iPhone got tossed off a raft on our river trip!
About 40 minutes later, the unmistakable chop of a helicopter started echoing up the canyon. The amazing team at Life Flight saw our “we’re all good!” wave, but decided to land and check on us anyway. Talk about incredible service!
It turned into an unforgettable memory—the kids got to crawl all over the helicopter, and we got to chat and share a laugh with the crew. We are so grateful we didn’t actually need a rescue, but insanely impressed by how fast help can show up, even in the middle of Desolation Canyon.
Want to meet the real-life heroes who keep us safe both at home and in the backcountry?
