@worcesterpairs is back at Art House! This next iteration of Worcester Pairs presents the work of painters Karl Bielik and Caterina Lewis.

Karl Bielik lives and works in London. His paintings have been in numerous shows at home and abroad, including The John Moores Painting Prize, The RA Summer Show, WAC Art Contemporary, The BEEP Painting Prize, The Marmite Prize and The London Open. He is a member of Contemporary British Painting and is the Founder and Director of Terrace Gallery in London. Bielik also writes and performs in Lark who are signed to Standard Lamp Records.

“I make visceral process driven oil paintings where the surface evolves out of chance encounters between marks and colour, the paintings are often heavily layered and reveal the history and doubt of the decision making.”

In her work Caterina pushes for an image that just ‘holds’ together figuratively and spatially, something that is teetering on an edge, ravelling and unravelling, intelligible and utterly dumb. The images Caterina works from always contain tension and possibility, creating a state of flux that is somehow reflected in the flux between abstraction and figuration. She begins with images from old photography books or found online and is drawn to those images that are somewhat indecipherable. This opens them up for painting abstractly and through unpicking and deconstructing them, a new (truer) order is brought into fruition through paint.

Caterina lives and works in London and graduated with an MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins in 2008. She has shown work in the UK and abroad and has co-directed The Lion and Lamb Gallery and Turps Gallery.

Excited to be exhibiting Life in Water this weekend @folk.cultures.research. The ‘Therapeutic Landscapes : Ritual, Folklore and Wellbeing’ symposium, is a unique focal point for a local, national and international network of practitioners, institutions and organisations that are engaged with the synergies between creativity, health and community informed by folklore and folk culture.

Life in Water is an ongoing autobiographical practice in which I enter the sea with small, hand‑held vessels. Each vessel is carried into the waves, sometimes held against my body as the water breaks over us, and sometimes released into the swell while I remain in the water beside it. In these moments, the sea becomes a co‑author: reshaping forms, softening edges, and leaving traces of its own movement on the clay. The resulting pieces are not symbolic objects but records of a shared experience between body, material, and place.

This work grows from a long relationship with the shoreline as a site of regulation and healing. Immersion in cold water has been central to how I navigate stress, grief, and the shifting realities of a changing body. By bringing the unpotes into the waves—whether held close or set loose—I invite the clay to undergo the same forces that act on me. We are shaped together: by impact, by surrender, and by the unpredictable rhythm of the tide.

The practice sits within traditions of ritual making, folk engagements with water as a cleansing and transformative element, and contemporary ecological approaches to care. The vessels carry the marks of these encounters: salt, abrasion, collapse, resilience. They hold the memory of a moment of co‑regulation between human and more‑than‑human bodies.
