On the face of it, the war may seem like a conflict between two military powers, but inwardly it is a war against the Sudanese citizen. Sasa, Wakati Ule

Jeremiah Onyango

EAPA Stories 2025 - 2nd Place

Jeremiah Onyango is a documentary photographer and storytelling enthusiast born and raised in Kibera, a vibrant community on the outskirts of Nairobi. With an unwavering passion for visual storytelling, he has dedicated his life to capturing the essence of his community and highlighting stories of resilience and human connection.

SASA, WAKATI ULE (derived from two opposing Swahili adverbs meaning NOW, THEN) is a poignant photography project capturing the day-to-day existence of the elderly residents at the Kibera Day Care Center for the Elderly (KDCCE). Founded by Mama Agnes Kariuki, the center serves as a vital refuge where seniors can commune, find joy, and combat the burden of isolation. Despite Article 57 of the Kenyan constitution obligating the state to care for older persons, the reality is a lack of essential provisions like healthcare, shelter, and financial support. Through these frames, the project looks to raise awareness, bridge intergenerational solidarity, and preserve the stories of an indomitable spirit of survival in a society that often overlooks them.

Daughters Of The Light

@sosina_mengistu

EAPA Stories - Honourable Mention 2

Sosina Mengistu is a photographer based in Ethiopia. Her work focuses on documentary and travel, capturing culture, landscapes, religion, and everyday life. She also uses self-portraiture to explore her personal journey.

Daughters Of The Light is a documentary photo series that shines a rare light on the lives of Ethiopian Orthodox Christian nuns living within centuries-old monasteries. While the lives of monks and priests are frequently documented, the daily existence and profound dedication of these women often remain unseen.

Faith (Inset)

Debre Libanos Monastery, Ethiopia – June 19, 2025

In the quiet glow of flickering candlelight, an Ethiopian nun stands in silent prayer within the centuries-old monastery of Debre Libanos. This intimate moment, shaped by repetition and devotion, evokes the profound connection between faith, ancestry, and tradition.

The stillness of her presence embodies the endurance of Ethiopia's spiritual heritage where generations have sought light, strength, and solace in the sacred rituals of monastic life. Through this image, faith is revealed not only as belief, but as continuity: a living thread that binds the past with the present, the earthly with the divine.

Timket

Debre Libanos Monastery, Ethiopia – January 24, 2025

This photograph captures a quiet moment during the celebration of Timket, the Ethiopian Orthodox Epiphany. While the monastery community nuns, monks, and visitors from afar gather in joyous celebration, this nun sits quietly, observing the rituals and festivities with stillness and reflection.

Her calm presence amidst the vibrant ceremony highlights the contemplative side of monastic life, showing how devotion and observation are intertwined even in moments of communal celebration.
