I returned to the Al Jabal Al Akhdar mountains in Oman this week having visited only a few months ago… and all I can say is it simply becomes more breathtakingly beautiful the more times you visit. I was staying @anantarajabalakhdar, a stunning resort (that’s been awarded Minor Hotel’s most sustainable destination in the past), for their annual olive harvest… and what an experience. From olive picking competitions (ahem, yes @upsideofliving and I won 🥇 We picked 17kgs of olives in 30 mins!) and olive oil tastings, to visiting a nearby distillery where farmers brought their harvested fruits for pressing, to culinary creations using the finest oils and finally, a talk by Dr Ali Al Furqani. This gentleman is the passionate horticulturist behind Oman’s olive revolution. For 13 years, he has been unlocking the secrets of olive cultivation in Al Jabal Al Akhdar’s mountains, discovering that the conditions at 2,000 metres above sea level actually create some of the world’s finest olive oils. It was a fleeting two days that taught me so much, and I am really looking forward to writing this feature for @ethicalistmag 🫒 by @upsideofliving

Celebrating Emi’s achievements. Here he is, aged 7, acing his numbers alongside his dedicated LSA. Emi started going to Junior school in Nov 2023. We considered homeschooling after nursery, but after much thought, we agreed that Emi would benefit enormously from a school environment, where not only his preferences for routine and consistency could be matched, but his communication ability could be enhanced through the regular interaction with the same group of children and adults. It’s something he needs that as homeschoolers, we cannot replicate at home - certainly not to the right level that would enhance his abilities to the maximum. Next step was to find the right school…and thankfully we did! Emi loves his school, his teachers, his friends and his LSA with whom he learns so much. With the right school supporting our son, it was an easy choice to make considering our otherwise unconventional ways. The learning for us through this journey is that the choices we make as a family need to make sense to the individual, and that unschooling also means being completely open to whatever the universe opens up…and to lean into that even if it might not ‘fit’ with whatever ideals a label pretends to carry. In fact…it’s understanding that there are no labels really…only infinite choices, openness and flow. And listening to that gut feeling when something just does or doesn’t vibe. Creativity. Experimenting with applications and social media has been eye opening. Letting go of tightly held beliefs around the potential detriments of certain platforms to see where their imagination might take them using the tools around them, led us to an incredible moment where they both collaborated to create content around play fighting scenarios…a subject matter my son is passionate about. Sofia for her side is passionate about exploring content creation and editing tools.
