Reverend Shinetsu Fukushima from Chokoji Zen Temple in Saitama Prefecture conducted a Kodo (Way of Incense) workshop for members of the Urasenke Tankokai Los Angeles Association. The 2 hour session was held in the chashitsu of Nichiren Beikoku Buddhist Temple. Eight members were in attendance. Fukushima sensei conducted the workshop last year which was well received. Four new participants attended with 4 who attended last year.

Reverend Fukushima briefly discussed the history and how it played a role during the Heian period and was mentioned in the Tale of Genji and continued through the samurai period.

Poetry is associated with kodo and Fukushima san shared a poem by a Japanese American:
“In days gone by, those who came before, cultivated home called Yamato, almond blossoms”

Fukushima sensei explained the meaning as, “I wonder if the Japanese Americans who immigrated in the 19th century compared almond flowers to cherry blossoms, looking back to their homeland.”

Fukushima sensei practices “Jikishin-ryu”, which focuses on procedures like the tea ceremony, derived from Shino ryu which was favored by Samurai rather than nobles. Participants were introduced to 2 types of “kyara” and a “manaka” fragrance. Part of the ceremony involved a guessing game of matching the scent with different kinds of incense. We were asked to not only smell the fragrance but also to listen so that the reading of the poetry was part of the experience. It was a great learning opportunity for those in attendance. taken in Nichiren Shu Beikoku Betsuin by @urasenkela

On an unusually cool, summer afternoon, the English Speaking Society and Youth Group of the Urasenke Los Angeles Tankokai organized an early summer fundraising chakai and demonstration for the community. It was an outreach event to promote Urasenke tea culture to English speakers and youth who might be interested in Los Angeles. 75 seats were reserved and 4 sekis were presented.
The theme of the chakai, “Whisper of Serenity ‘’, centered on early summer. A befitting jiku was presented,“Ichiu Senzan Wo Uruosu” (A single cloud mists an entire mountain). Utensils were also chosen to embody this time of year. An California oak wood nagaita, paired with a cooling Seiji celadon mizusashi by the Korean artist Yoo Geun Hyeong, and a white lacquered natsume with the designs of fireflies and grasses. The okashi was handmade by our own Mme.Kodama - ayu swimming in a river..
Before entering the tea room, docents explained what the tea ceremony involves. Urasenke Chado Panels were hung and showed the fundamentals of a tea event – Tea Ceremony utensils, Thin tea Ceremony utensils, Personal Items for Tea Ceremony and Flowers and Sweets for Tea Ceremony.
Guests from the audience were chosen to sit in the tea room and guided by experienced practitioners from different shachu. In this way, they had an immersive experience of a tea gathering.
During the temae, assigned managers gave a presentation on history and the fundamentals of the Urasenke tradition. Each guide had a different anecdote to tell and enlightened the audience what might appear invisible or inconsequential inside the tea room. This was a great opportunity to promote the spirit of Chado to a wide audience. taken in Shoseian teahouse & Friendship Garden by @urasenkela

LITTLE TOKYO SPARKLE
MAY 18, 2024

On a cool Saturday morning, Ann Abe, Miyuki Guterres, Yasmin Elming and Naomi Borelli represented the Urasenke Tankokai Los Angeles Association (UTLAA), at the annual Little Tokyo Sparkle. It is a day where the community comes together to help pick up trash, wipe graffiti, and sweep the sidewalks of Little Tokyo. There were over 370 volunteers! It was a fun day to participate and make a difference in our community. We were assigned to clean Central Street between 1st and 2nd streets. It is said that “volunteering is a do-good, feel-good activity.” It was definitely true!

taken in Little Tokyo by @urasenkela

URASENKE TANKOKAI LOS ANGELES ASSOCIATION
OKASHI MAKING FOR RIKYUKI
MARCH 17, 19, AND 22, 2024

Members of the Urasenke Tankokai Los Angeles Association were invited to participate in the making of the hanaikada okashi that was served at Rikyuki on March 24, 2024.

The sessions were led by Ms. Nobue Kodama. The hanaikada okashi was specially selected since we learned that Urasenke Japan serves this at the memorial for Rikyu sama. Legend has it that the urn was attached to the flower raft and as it floated, the urn detached signifying that the spirit had gone to heaven.

Over the 3 days, 14 members volunteered their time to make 80 of the okashi. Not only was it a great learning experience, members from different shachu had an opportunity to gather and get to know each other. Special thanks to Ms. Kodama for holding this fun activity for our members.

by @urasenkela

EMPEROR’S BIRTHDAY RECEPTION
CONSUL GENERAL OF JAPAN’S RESIDENCE
FEBRUARY 29, 2024

On February 24th, 2024, the Birthday Celebration of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan was held at the Consul General of Japan’s residence. Urasenke Tankokai Los Angeles Association was invited to participate with tea ceremonies for the invited guests on the lawn of the residence. Approximately, 100 guests were offered matcha and dragon motif ohigashi from Kanshundo.

The misonodana temae was performed by Somi Gill and Soketsu Guterres. A shikishi written by Sen Soshitsu XV “Furou, Sennen no Midori” meaning long life and longevity was displayed. It was a gift to the Tankokai on Daisoshosama’s 100th birthday last year. Utensils were selected to highlight the auspicious occasion with a “shochikubai”, bamboo, pine and plum. A Shiogama Onatsume by Shoichiro from Wajima, depicted pine, a symbolism for good health. It also was used in memory of this city ravaged in the Noto Peninsula earthquake. The Chashaku was by Ishikawa Zenshi with the poetic name, “Hakubai” or white plum, meaning beauty and a bamboo bowl, Ninsei Takechawan, by Eiraku Zengoro, represented vitality.

Preparing and serving the tea were by the Tankokai members, Soshin Abe, Sokei Nakada, Sochi Ohshima, Soho Duffey, Soyo Nakamori, and Soki Umbriaco.

It was a joyous occasion where tea was served to both guests who have had tea before and those whom it was a first time experience. We were grateful to the Consul General of Japan and Mrs. Kenko Sone for this wonderful opportunity. taken in Los Angeles, California by @urasenkela

On a clear spring day, March 24th, the Urasenke Tankokai Los Angeles Association (UTLAA) held Rikyuki at Nichiren Shu Beikoku Betsuin in Los Angeles. Rikyuki is the annual memorial tea ceremony to commemorate the life of Sen no Rikyu (1522-1591), the founder of the Japanese way of tea. 74 people participated in the ceremony to pay respect for the great tea master.
The event started with Hanayose, the flower tribute to Rikyu. Beautiful seasonal flowers were arranged in a variety of flower containers by managers. After that, Kucha, the tea offering to Rikyu was made by Mme. Sochi Ohshima as teishu and Mme. Sokei Kung as hanto. A bowl of tea was offered to the alcove in memory of Rikyu and all the guests bowed in his honor.
After Kucha, tea and sweets called Hanaikada “Flower Rafts”, handmade by members of association, were served to all the guests. The word Hanaikada represents the atmosphere of late spring with scattered cherry blossom petals floating on the surface of the water. It was said that an urn tied by a cord on the raft, untied and the urn was found floating in the river meaning it would go straight to paradise. Hanaikada is usually served by Urasenke on the anniversary of Rikyu’s death.
After Rikyuki, Reverend Shumyo Kojima, head priest of the Zenshuji Temple, gave a lecture on Zen-go and the relationship to our practice of tea. He explained that Zen-go is usually used on a scroll in a tea gathering. He wrote the words in beautiful calligraphy and explained the stories behind many famous sayings and gave examples such as Kissako, “Just have some tea” or Nichi nichi kore kojitsu, “Every day is a good day”.
Chief of Administration of UTLAA, Ann Soshin Abe concluded by thanking everyone for coming. taken in Nichiren Shu Beikoku Betsuin by @urasenkela

On Sunday February 18th, 2024, a tea ceremony demonstration was held at South Coast Botanic Garden, Palos Verdes, for the first time as one of their cultural classes. The demonstration took place in their beautiful Rose Garden area for garden members. Most of the participants never had matcha nor have seen a tea ceremony. Chief of Administration, Soshin Abe, gave a lecture about Chado history before the demonstration and explained the procedure step by step. The theme of the demonstration was “Ichigo ichie”, translated as, “Appreciating this one time meeting.” The chosen Chashaku was Wajima-nuri, “Takara zukushi”, a treasured tea scoop dedicated to the city that was severely damaged by the Noto earthquake. The demonstration was presented by Mme. Ogawa and her students, Karen Ishii and Takayuki Sakai who served as host and assistant. After the demonstration, authentic Japanese sweets and a bowl of matcha were served to all the guests. The audience had many questions regarding the Chado culture and the utensils selected for the event. It was a wonderful opportunity for the members to spread and promote the beauty of the culture to the public.

taken in South Coast Botanic Garden by @urasenkela
