Last 6 months at home in India have been therapy for the soul. Family, friends, food, love, music, talks, travel, and even greater appreciation for the diversity and beauty that is my country. Just little glimpses here of Rajasthan, Varanasi, Punjab, Kashmir and Kolkata. Heart is so full. taken in India by @urvashig

The oldest city in India and the #spiritual home of Hinduism - #Varanasi is just beautiful, chaotic, delicious and much more. My recommendations below -

The Ghaats - Afternoon walk on the #ghaat with some food vendors, musicians and #Ganga views is incredibly peaceful. A river tour on a bajra (#boats, all converted to CNG!) is lovely around sunset. View of the daily evening Ganga Aarti from the bajra was beautiful, the sunrise #aarti is seen from the steps of the ghaat and not by boat.

Kashi #Vishwanath Temple - The main temple on Dashwamedh Ghaat is stunning. The new temple complex was built about a year ago and it is absolutely beautiful. So well organized, clean and peaceful.

Lakshmi Tea House - Go down a tiny narrow lane to find the best coal-roasted, buttery toast and chai. It’s very close to the Vishwanath temple, as are several other food stalls and vendors.

#Malaiyo - Delicious dessert made on the streets of Varanasi in the winter only. There are many places that make it and Shreeji is the most popular one, but I personally favor Dwarkapuri stall, near Lakshmi Tea House. It’s basically just milk foam, churned by hand, flavored with saffron and pistachios, and so creamy and delicious. Can’t miss this.

Pizzeria Vaatika - Excellent cafe on #AssiGhat, and the most delicious #applepie. Food, coffees and views were really good too.

Baati Chokha Restaurant - Baati or litti are traditional stuffed doughy balls from the Bihar / UP area, made entirely by hand and roasted in coal. It’s eaten with daal, veggies and condiments. Lots of options but this place was my favorite.

Chaat - Lots of places for street chaats, loved the aloo kachori chaat right next to Lakshmi Tea House. Godaulia area is full of amazing street food stalls.

Magai Paan - This paan is unique to Kashi, made with light green magai leaves and not the usual dark green betel leaves. You can’t go to Varanasi and NOT have the paan…

Pro tip - Pick a hotel near the ghaats. The city was not made for 2m people and the traffic can get really really bad. Some options are Brij Rama and Ganges View.
