This week, we’re proud to share our 2025–26 annual report. From student success and AI literacy to new research resources, cultural programs, and partnerships across USC and beyond, the report highlights just a few of our accomplishments from the past academic year and the many ways we support USC students, researchers, staff, and teaching faculty.

As Dean Melissa Just writes inside, “Every accomplishment described in this report reflects the creativity, expertise, and dedication of our library faculty and staff. Their commitment—along with our university leadership and campus partners, our Board of Councilors and library supporters, and our many collaborators—makes our work possible."

Last year, the American Library Association documented challenges to 4,235 books, many initiated by elected officials, school boards, and organized pressure groups. On Monday, October 5, join us for a timely, thought-provoking conversation about censorship, intellectual freedom, and your right to read.

Dr. HURIYA JABBAR, USC Rossier School of Education, will moderate a discussion among former librarian and current candidate for Huntington Beach City Council ERIN SPIVEY; California State Assemblymember (District 66) AL MURATSUCHI; and ERNESTO CISNEROS, a public school teacher and nationally acclaimed author of Efrén Divided and Queso, Just In Time.

In preparation for the discussion, we encourage everyone to view The Librarians, directed by Kim A. Snyder, which won this year’s Emmy Award for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking. It follows librarians across the United States as they confront a sweeping wave of book bans and are forced to become unexpected defenders of the First Amendment. The film reveals the personal toll of censorship while framing the fight for the freedom to read as a broader struggle for democracy.

Forbidden Pages: Past and Present, an exhibition of materials from the USC Libraries Special Collections covering hundreds of years of attempts at
censorship, is on display throughout the fall 2026 semester on the first floor of Doheny Library.

Last night's performance of The Visions of Simone Machard 2.0, presented by @uscvandv, took us from 1940 France to a dystopian Los Angeles.

@USCSDA students and faculty brought to life playwright and professor Oliver Mayer’s new adaptation of The Visions of Simone Machard, the 1942 play by Lion Feuchtwanger and Bertolt Brecht about oppression, resistance, and the impulse to act in the face of political upheaval. Mayer’s version transplants the story to a Los Angeles shaped by oil production and constant surveillance, with design and staging by Evidence Room founding artistic director Bart DeLorenzo.

Following the staged reading, Mayer joined @USCDornsife professors Manuel Pastor and Béatrice Mousli and student performers for a conversation about the adaptation and its themes of resistance, community, and social change.

Many thanks to everyone who joined us! by @usclibraries

We recently launched two tutorials for the start of fall semester to introduce students to the fundamentals of artificial intelligence (AI) literacy and the responsible use of AI in classes.

Created by Tarley Stevenson and Michaela Ullmann of @lib.learn.usc, the tutorials cover the basic operations of AI tools; how they affect individuals, society, and the environment; their use of personal or confidential information; and how to evaluate outputs from AI tools critically.

The tutorials also help students decide when and how to use AI in coursework so that it supports—rather than replaces—learning, while protecting privacy, maintaining academic honesty, and avoiding common pitfalls.

Yesterday, returned Peace Corps volunteers, scholars, librarians, and members of the Peace Corps Korea community gathered at Doheny Memorial Library for “The Mutual Gaze,” marking the 60th anniversary of the first arrival of U.S. Peace Corps volunteers in Korea.

Hosted by our Korean Heritage Library—which is celebrating its own 40th anniversary this year—the conference explored how personal encounters, educational exchange, and cross-cultural understanding helped forge enduring ties between Korea and the United States—and how Peace Corps service inspired lifelong contributions to Korean studies, scholarship, and public life.

Thanks to everyone who joined us in reflecting on six decades of connection, learning, and exchange! by @usclibraries

📕How does an 84-year-old play find new light and meaning in today’s world?

🛢️Enter “The Visions of Simone Machard 2.0”, Oliver Mayer’s new adaptation set in a dystopian L.A. shaped by oil production and constant surveillance. This thought-provoking presentation evokes both our powerlessness in the midst of political upheaval, and the urge to resist against all odds 🔥

✊ After the staged reading, @USCSDA professor and playwright #OliverMayer will connect with an artistic director and academics to discuss Joan of Arc, Brecht, and revolution. Refreshments to follow. Tickets are going fast, but you can RSVP at the link in bio to either watch in-person or on our YouTube channel 📺

Did you know? USC Special Collections has more than 1,000 artist books, which are searchable in the USC Libraries catalog.

What is an artist book? They can be loosely defined as works of art in a book or book-like structure.

Seen here is a session with Dr. Taylor’s Writ 150: Issues in Aesthetics. This semester, students will select an artist book in USC Special Collections for a course assignment where they will evaluate form, materiality, style and effect. #artistbooks #SpecialCollections #BookArts #Bookstagram by @usclibraries

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the arrival in Korea of the first U.S. Peace Corps volunteers in 1966.

Next Thursday, September 10, join us for an all-day conference celebrating this important milestone that quietly set in motion one of the most enduring people-to-people relationships in modern Korea–U.S. history. Beyond diplomacy and economics, the alliance's lasting strength has been built through personal encounters, educational exchange, and cultural understanding.

This conference also celebrates two books commemorating that legacy. Peace Corps Korea and the Path of Korean Studies gathers the experiences of four returned volunteers—Edward Shultz, Donald Baker, Laurel Kendall, and Suzanna Samstag Oh—whose service inspired lifelong contributions to Korean Studies. The conference also features The Long Arc of Leadership by James E.H. Mayer, former Peace Corps director, reflecting four decades of leadership built on humility, listening, and cross-cultural engagement.

Bringing together these authors, scholars, and the Peace Corps Korea community at the Korean Heritage Library of USC, this conference argues that the living foundation of the Korea–U.S. alliance is not only geopolitical but deeply human—built, over sixty years, one encounter at a time.

LA2026 kicks off the fall semester next Tuesday, September 8, with "Leaders and Achievements," our latest humanities discussion in partnership with @usclibraries and @uscspeccol. Dr. Allissa Richardson (@uscannenberg) and Dr. David-James Gonzales (BYU) will discuss the power of grassroots activism in shaping education, civic institutions, and American politics. Their conversation draws inspiration from the life and work of Congresswoman Yvonne Braithwaite Burke, whose papers are featured in the exhibition "1776-1976: USC, Los Angeles, and the U.S. Bicentennial."

Join us for a free lunchtime webinar on September 8 (12-1pm PT), and be sure to check out "1776-1976" at USC's Doheny Library before it closes later this month!

RSVP on the LA2026 website (link in bio) or visit https://dornsife.usc.edu/la2026/events.
