A fun YA novel from 2004 (228 pgs) which won the Boston Globe Horn Book Award (one of the newspapers delivered to our house when I was a kid) The first of 3 "Antsy" Bonano novels. A Brooklyn teenager brings another kid, Calvin aka "The Schwa" into his friend group,. Calvin is so blindingly average that he goes completely unnoticed by the other kids, teachers and even his own father. He and Antsy develope a strong friendship but when Antsy schemes to use Calvin's "invisibility" to pull some pranks and make a few bucks at school and in the neighborhood, they run afoul of the reclusive, cantankerous, rich local restaurant owner. (Old Man Cawley) All this leads to surprise friendships including with Cawley's blind, teenaged granddaughter, Lexis. She is confident and pushes the boys, and eventually her grandfather out of their comfort zones. Quite humorous, enjoyable read. #antsybonano #yaadventure #yanovel #nealshusterman #brooklynny by @usuallymikey

Firestarter 1980 401 pages. Read in this recent Signet reprint. Two college students in 1969 participate in a government "drug" trial and end up developing telekinesis and mind control power. They marry and pass these powers and more (Pyrokinesis) to their little girl, Charlie. After the wife is killed by the government (aka "The Shop") in an attempt to possess Charlie, she and her Dad Andy spend the first half of the book on the run. Little does the Shop know the extent of Charlie's power, but they regret finding out! 🔥 This was mostly a #psychologicalthriller with the paranormal/scifi pyrokenisis plot. It was good not amazing. Only 1 or 2 chapters in the middle slowed the forward momentum but it kept me rooting for Andy and Charlie and was very satisfying when Charlie got to let loose! Sometimes King can be unnecessarily crude in his writing but almost gleeful when he's describing the chaos and death in the big conclusive action scene! Rainbird was an especially creepy character, not always in the best way. #sciencefictionnovel #speculativefiction #horrorfiction #stephenking by @usuallymikey

From 2003. 399 pages. A combination psychological thriller/first contact story. The entire town of Blind Lake, MN is built around a government research facility where scientists use technology they barely understand (self replicating quantum computer aka "the eye" hidden 3 stories underground which controls a deep space "telescope" array used to study/observe/spy on a human/insect like alien (only known as "subject") living on an arid planet impossibly far away. On the day three journalists arrive, the facility is inexplicably quarantined, enforced by the military, No one, and no communication, in or out. As it drags on for months tensions rise between the factions who blame and want the array destroyed (top administrator, Ray, who is a total a$$hole") while others (Marguerite, Ray's ex-wife) fight to keep the project alive. Caught in the middle is their daughter, 11 year old Tess. A strange child, haunted by her imaginary friend "Mirror Girl" and a seemingly uncanny connection to the array and the "subject". This one didn't really get going until halfway through, but it was not boring. Very Crichton-like. The ending was weird and satisfying. Tess was certainly a favorite character. #sciencefictionnovel #psychologicalthriller #firstcontact #paperbackbookcollection

Book Haul! Staying out of the thrifts is like the tide . . . You just can't stop it! This 'Fantastic Voyage' replaces my falling apart copy I've had since I was a teen. 'Nine Tomorrows' is now a duplicate that needs to end up on someone else's shelf. Now I'll pass on my nice hard cover of 'My Cousin Rachel' to MY cousin. 'Jude the Obscure' replaces a recent mass market paperback. Silly practice but I'll gladly take an old #signetclassics. I'm slowly acquiring more and more of the Xanth series. Now to read one! I also got out very early before sun up (it's hitting 101° here today! C'mon Mother Nature . . . it's October!!) for about 15 miles on the bike for a little free library tour. Recirculated 12 books. Picked up one. Rarely see old scifi/fantasy so I grabbed this short "The Face in the Frost" by John Bellairs, never heard of him, but why not? #bookhaul #vintagepaperback #usedbookhaul #sciencefictionpaperbacks 📚🚀🚴‍♂️🥵🔥 by @usuallymikey
