✨ Huge congratulations to Dr. Puja Parekh, assistant professor of neuroscience at UT Dallas, on receiving a prestigious Young Investigator Grant from the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (BBRF)! 🧠🌟

Her research explores the intricate relationship between the brain's reward and effort systems, and how stress shapes our motivation. With a focus on the nucleus accumbens, a key region involved in reward, motivation, and resilience, this two-year BBRF grant will support Dr. Parekh's work to uncover critical neural and genetic signatures that could guide future therapies for depression and other psychiatric conditions. 💡🔬

🌟 Happy #FluorescenceFriday! 🌟

"The Cosmos is within us. We are made of star stuff" -Carl Sagan

This mosaic confocal image shows dissociated human dorsal root ganglion neurons, looking like a constellation in a dish. 🌠

💫 Immunofluorescence:
🟡 Peripherin - sensory neurons and their branching axonal fibers
🔵 DAPI - nuclei

Who knew the pain sensory system could be so beautiful? Time for some star gazing 🤩

✨ It’s #FluorescenceFriday! ✨

Today’s image is of a human dorsal root ganglion (DRG). Sensory neurons and their intricate fibers weave through this hub, carrying signals of touch, temperature, and pain to the spinal cord.

💫Immunofluorescence:
🟢 Peripherin – sensory neurons + their axons
🔴 Nav1.7 – voltage-gated sodium channel critical for pain signaling
🔵 DAPI – nuclei

Science or art? I say both. 💫

🥳 Big congrats to two remarkable professors! 🎉

This semester, @bbsutdallas faculty members Catherine Thorn, PhD, and Ben Kolber, PhD, were promoted to associate professor with tenure and professor, respectively.

Happy to see your success and looking forward to your future discoveries!

Catherine Thorn is also a member of the Texas Biomedical Device Center and Ben Kolber is a member of the Center for Advanced Pain Studies.

Congrats to all the faculty that received promotions across @ut_dallas.

💫 It's that time of the week again! It's #FluorescenceFriday!

This colorful image is from the human trigeminal ganglion (TG), a collection of neurons that stretch long axons (like tiny biological wires) out to your head and face, letting you feel temperature, itch, touch, and pain. These are the very neurons that spark when you sip hot coffee ☕, feel a cool breeze 💨, or wince from a sudden migraine 💥.

✨️ RNAscope in situ hybridization + immunofluorescence:
🧡 Sox10 (satellite glia and Schwann cells)
🩵 Peripherin (sensory neurons)
💙 mRNA 1 (secret 🤫)
🩷 mRNA 2 (secret 🤐)
💜 DAPI (nuclei)

By imaging human TG tissue directly, we can better understand how these neurons (and their glial cell neighbors) change their physiology in health and disease. This is especially important for conditions like migraine and trigeminal neuralgia, where the TG plays a central role in facial pain.

🤯 Good news for #vagusnervestimulation and PTSD patients! In a phase one trial conducted @ut_dallas and Baylor University Medical Center, participants received vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) paired with traditional therapy. Researchers found that this paired treatment eliminated the PTSD diagnosis in all nine participants. Phase two trials are currently underway.

Dr. Mike Kilgard said, "In a trial like this, some subjects usually do get better, but rarely do they lose their PTSD diagnosis. Typically, the majority will have this diagnosis for the rest of their lives. In this case, we had 100% loss of diagnosis. It’s very promising.”
