📊 Over 100 million Americans live with chronic pain 🔬 Advancing the science of pain and migraine to improve lives 📢 Communicating our discoveries
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Researchers @ut_dallas are tackling one of the biggest mysteries in women’s health: what actually triggers endometriosis pain? Backed by a $3.4 million NIH grant, Kate Sadler, PhD, and Nicole De Nisco, PhD, are investigating how interactions between the reproductive microbiome and pain-sensing nerves drive chronic symptoms. This groundbreaking work could pave the way for targeted pain relief.

Did you know you have pain-sensing neurons that are basically asleep right now? 😴⚡️

Silent (or sleeping) nociceptors are specialized sensory nerve fibers in your skin that are unresponsive to normal everyday mechanical touch. But in chronic or neuropathic pain, they wake up, become hyperactive, and keep sending pain signals to the brain.

We collaborated with Dr. Angelika Lampert and her team to map out the molecular architecture of these elusive neurons! Check it out at https://utd.link/4fo 🧬

Celebrating our F32 awardees!

A big shoutout to Ashley Plumb, PhD, and Sera I. Nakisli, PhD, on being awarded NIH F32 Kirschstein Research Training Fellowships!

🔹 Ashley Plumb, PhD, is exploring how stress-related shifts in the gut microbiome impact migrain susceptibility to open doors for personalized treatments.

🔹 Sera Nakisli, PhD, is bridging findings across mice, rats, and humans to improve preclinical models for diabetic neuropathy.

We had a great Works in Progress seminar last week, led by Khadijah Mazhar, PhD, who presented "Nociceptors in Cancer."

She presented her recent work, which uses single-cell transcriptomics to predict how tumor cells drive nerve sprouting across cancers, highlighting potential molecular targets to slow disease progression and relieve cancer-associated pain.

Chronic pain affects more than 100 million people in the United States alone.

To kick off Pain Awareness Month this September, we’re launching a new educational video series with @us_asp : The Neuroscience of Pain.

Led by Dr. Kate Sadler, this series aims to translate medical terminology and neurobiology research into clear, everyday language.

Hit follow so you don't miss an episode and visit our profile to explore the work being done at the Center for Advanced Pain Studies.

We are proud to share that Dr. Ted Price, director of our Center, has won the Technology Inventor Award from the The Technology Association for North Texas.

This honor recognizes pioneers across North Texas responsible for breakthrough ideas, processes, or products that advance their disciplines. Dr. Price’s drive to push the boundaries of pain neurobiology and therapeutic discovery continues to lead our entire team forward. Every milestone like this brings us one step closer to transforming pain management and improving lives.

Congratulations to all of the inspiring North Texas finalists recognized this year: Tanmay Bera, PhD (Phylactics), Dane Grasse, PhD (Teliatry), and Andrew Silver (Tango Networks). Thank you for championing innovation in our region!

So incredibly proud of Dr. Ashley Plumb — she just received an NIH F32 grant! This is the first F32 award for the Sadler Lab and only the third such active award at @ut_dallas !

The F32 is a competitive postdoctoral fellowship awarded by @nihgov — Ashley’s $156,128 grant will fund the next two years of her salary in the Sadler Lab. During this time Ashley will study how stress-induced changes in the gut microbiome contribute to migraine headache susceptibility and development. Huge shout out to Ashley’s co-sponsor and migraine expert, Dr. Greg Dussor, for help with model development and for asking the hard questions during application preparation! We can’t wait to see what Ashley learns over the next two years — stay tuned! 💩🤕
