Join Together with the Band

On September 18th the Utica HS Marching Band hosted its annual Alumni Night. The band has been hosting alumni each of the past 10 years and this year was the biggest ever turnout. 54 alumni attended including alums from the 2020s, 2010s (including current UHS teacher Collin Syler), 2000s, 1990s (including current UHS Director Brett Bays), and two alumni from the 1980s.

Prior to the game, the alums joined the band on the track to play, “I Just Might” by Bruno Mars, “Smoke On The Water” by Deep Purple, and “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond. At halftime, the alumni joined the current band on the field at Swinehart Stadium and performed “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver. by @uticacommunityschools

For many young people, voting for the first time can feel intimidating. At Henry Ford II High School, students had the opportunity to become more familiar with the voting process through a hands-on experience designed to help prepare them for civic participation.

Henry Ford II Teacher Christina Versele invited a nonpartisan voter-registration organization to work with students. The group has visited Henry Ford II during the past two springs to help eligible students register to vote and will return in both October and April.

“Our Time” was among the organizations that helped make the school’s recent voting simulation possible. During lunch on September 17th, representatives from Our Time, the League of Women Voters and the Macomb County Clerk’s Office joined HFII students to provide an authentic look at the voting process.

Students were able to use actual voting machines and tabulators, which allowed students to experience what it is like to cast a ballot and see how votes are processed.

“Being able to do the voting simulation was very helpful, and it gave me insight on what real voting looks like,” Henry Ford II junior Aviana Bradford said. “I think it is important for students to learn how to vote, so they are not confused when it becomes time for them to participate in their first real election.”

UCS Students Explore College and Career Opportunities at Comerica Park

Utica Community Schools (UCS) AVID juniors and seniors had the opportunity to take their college and career exploration outside the classroom on September 23, attending the Detroit Tigers College Recruitment Day at Comerica Park.

The event, part of the Detroit Tigers' Class Outside series, brought together college recruiters and high school students to explore opportunities available after graduation. UCS AVID students connected with college and career representatives, learned about postsecondary pathways, and attended a student financial aid presentation designed to help them better understand the resources available to support their educational goals.

Adding to the excitement, the Eisenhower High School Marching Band partnered with AVID for this year's event and proudly performed the National Anthem before the Detroit Tigers game.

The experience directly supports the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program's mission of preparing students for college and career readiness. Through opportunities to interact with college representatives, explore financial aid options, and experience a major community event, students gained valuable insight into planning for life after high school.

The day combined college exploration, career readiness, music, and baseball, providing UCS students with an opportunity to envision their futures while celebrating the talents and opportunities available throughout the district.

Austin Kryta is driven to success when it comes to his passion for motorsports.

The Eisenhower senior has spent half of his life in motorsports and is in a fast lane for a future in automotive and racing industries.

“I always liked cars as a kid, and my dad was always into it,” he said. “I was always around cars and we were able to find a competition for my age group.”

Kryta began racing when he was eight, moving from quarter-midgets (a scaled down version of midget cars – a class of racing cars) to full-sized modified racing at 14 at the same time he earned a NASCAR competition license. He has won national competitions and is a two-time track champion at the East Lansing Kart Track, including an undefeated season.

He now has his own race car and holds a SCAA Full Competition License. Recently, he was recognized at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals with a Future of Motorsports Award. In addition, he is a five-time winner at Rumble in Fort Wayne, an event that has attracted racers such as former NASCAR driver Tony Stewart. This summer, he was the youngest winner when he placed first in a heat race at Owosso Speedway.

Kryta recently enrolled at Eisenhower High School where he is excited to be part of the auto repair program. by @uticacommunityschools
