The next Wood Street Sewing Bear will be on Wednesday 18th November.
You know the drill…Bring stitching and chat!
Always happy to give advice (on sewing based things)
If you don’t yet stitch and would like to give it a go I will have supplies for mini samplers and scrap patch making and can get you started!

It is now definitely the darker season so headtorches/sewing lamps are an excellent idea! by @utilifolk

A huge welcome to our newest pledge, @utilifolk !

Utilifolk is a social sewing group (currently at Wood Street Bear) - they also run StitchHikes (short walks into local green spaces to sit and stitch in nature). Aside occasional age restrictions (when things are not for kids) all their events and workshops are open and welcome everyone.

The told us:

“Since starting the Wood Street Sewing Bear I’ve met so many new people and realised how valuable it is for humans to have a wide variety of ways to come together. Stitching is such a useful skill, as well as great pastime and a wonderful way to spend time with others and strengthen our sense of community”

#citizenfriday prep!

The 27th of November is shaping up to be a wonderful country (world?) wide celebration of all things Share Repair Fresh-air.
Check out @actionismcommunity and see what events are planned near you!

Myself and @makedoandwonder have plans to mark the day in here E17 with a “Repair, Repurpose and Patch” event popping up at the new @ageukwalthamforestshops on Hoe street.

More details of what we are planning will be shared very soon!

As part of the prep, today I went to the Leyton store to have a rootle through the bags of clothing that aren’t suitable for the shop floor, items which are about to go to the ragman.

I pulled out a selection of garments that I believe can be reworked and so can have a longer clothing based life!

How do you feel about new clothes made from old clothes?
Are you already familiar with designers and makers transforming unwanted textiles into new things?

I’m excited to be re-visiting a creative project we started together some years back!
Watch this space!

But before anything goes near the design table or sewing machine it all needs a wash! by @utilifolk

A very much loved pair of shorts with (shockingly) flimsy pocket bags that are now disintegrating …
I’ve replaced one - the second pocket (and a few holes to fix) still to do!

So far these 2 pictures represent about 2 hours work for me.

Lots of unpicking, making a pocket bag pattern, cutting and constructing the pocket bag itself and putting everything back together!

My point being ‘just fixing the holes in the pockets’ is in fact quite a complex task.

This, and most of other clothing repairs, take time, skilled human hands, the right tools, materials and patience.
So please remember the value of that work, and thus the price of the repair, has zero to do with the price you paid for the garment in the first place! by @utilifolk

So much amazing input in the last week in Chapel End #E17 at our community picnic last weekend and Walthamstow Central Library for the Future Walthamstow Forest neighbourhood assembly last night.

So many great conversations, all taken down and will be collated to help @lbwalthamforest plan with residents’ views firmly included.

Sunday’s banner making for @walthamforestgreenparty at the Chapel End community Picnic in Lloyd park.
@sue.wheat @laylarosagreenparty and Luke Glazzard were all there to talk to local residents about their hopes and dreams for their corner of Waltham Forest.
I was there to help people put there ideas to fabric in words or pictures.
It was lovely to meet so many locals and uplifting to hear so much talk about nature and community!

All the contributions will now get stitched on to the banner ….. can’t wait to hear what the council team takeaway from the event and how they will turn ideas into actions! by @utilifolk

Anyone recognise this?
I’m currently preparing a banner ready for community contributions!
On Sunday afternoon I will be in Lloyd Park with @sue.wheat @laylarosagreenparty and others for the Chapel End community picnic!
We will be making patches to add to the banner to show what people love, would like, and hope for our corner of the borough and for Waltham Forest as a whole!
Come along and say hi and add your thoughts!
