YEZZZ ❗️❗️❗️ @valokuvamuseo and @hippolytegallery have granted the Finnish Photobook Award 2025 to @julianairenesmith’s book 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗 𝗙𝗘𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗦 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗗𝗔𝗬 💛💛💛 The winner was chosen by by @emma_bowkett, photography director at @ft_weekend, as well as a photography curator and assistant lecturer at the @lcclondon ✨

A little reminder from Arles 🌞 𝑮𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝑭𝒆𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝑫𝒂𝒚 by @julianairenesmith and 𝑮𝒂𝒛𝒆 𝑺𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒔 by @kaisasyrjaenen are both on view as part of this year’s Les Prix du Livre shortlist exhibition at @rencontresarles 🇫🇷

𝑮𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝑭𝒆𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝑫𝒂𝒚 was selected in the Author’s Book category and 𝑮𝒂𝒛𝒆 𝑺𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒔 was selected in the Historical Book category. ⚔️

What does beauty demand of us, and where does that demand come from?

@kaisasyrjaenen spent seven years collecting the answer. Gaze Studies is a nearly 300-page book combining Syrjänen’s own photos and texts with archival material ↔️ an avalanche of images and documents on beauty, appearance, and power. 🍸

The nearly 300-page book combines Syrjänen’s own work with numerous archival sources. The texts in the book are in Finnish and English.

The book gathers an avalanche of archival material from earlier exhibitions, now offering a glimpse into Syrjänen’s background research in book form. Through this wast collection of images (the book is nearly 300 pages long), Syrjänen traces the demands, history, and ongoing presence of Western ideals of female beauty.

Perhaps fittingly, this extensive book is itself elegantly designed by @linneaari . It features, among other things, a folded dust jacket that doubles as a beauty-word index.

”The pages teem with images from the artist’s childhood and youth, interwoven with mundane pictures of her own children and partner. Layers of time mingle without any clear hierarchy, and the reader inevitably begins to wonder what things recur across generations.

Yet the work’s apparent playfulness never remains superficial. It creates just enough distance for the reader to confront a painful subject. Personal trauma becomes part of a universal everydayness, where the boundaries between joy and sorrow are porous. The visual lightness is disrupted by plainspoken sentences and single words, reminding us that a stain can emerge just as easily from joy as from pain.”
